Why U657 is my U-boat of choice
When my love for German U-boats began, I wanted to attach myself to one particular U-boat and I was finding this very difficult due to the amount of U numbers.
In the end I thought I'll count the amount of letters in my first, middle, and surname, and this is what I came up with; D***** S**** V****** 6 5 7 Since then I have researched U657 so much, that I now know all the real life crews names, all the crew back ground history, all the patrols of the boat, where she was built, her bases, it's emblems (x 2), colour scheme, and sadly the way she perished and where her internal tomb lays today. U657 is my U-boat of choice and it's the only number I use in the SH3 world, whats yours and why? Last edited by Venatore; 11-15-07 at 05:09 AM. |

Hey Venatore,
I just used the same method like you and came to the conclusion that "my" u-boot would be... U-659 ![]() It seems that U-659 sunk after colliding with U-439... "Sank at 0030hrs on 4 May, 1943 in the North Atlantic west of Cape Finisterre, in position 43.32N, 13.20W, after a collision with U-439. 44 dead and 3 survivors" http://uboat.net/boats/u659.htm How unlucky have you got to be to crash into another u-boot in the middle of the Atlantic? :rotfl: |

I just go with the U-Boat that's the same as my easy-to-remember luggage locker combination number.

I thought it appropriate to continue the sequence of
U-47 (Scapa Flow) U-48 (Most successful boat) with a formerly unknown U-49: http://www.uboat.net/boats/u49.htm History books can now be corrected ![]()

Hey V,
If I used your method I would end up with U-666. ![]() Back to the drawing board. ![]() |

Probably superstition. If I'm within 250km of the UK I dive every day between 1200 and 1400 hours. That got started when I was bounced by half of the RAF sometime in 1943.
U-Boat numbers were random the first time for me. U-48 was an unintentional designation for my Type VIIB. I might stick with U-568, name of my highly successful Type VIIC that survived the war. Got a good reference book handy for the data on both.

I just accept what the game issues me. It is interesting to see how others adopt boats.

I tend to go with whatever boat, at least until more recently when i tried taking U48 through the war. That stopped in the middle of the North Atlantic.....
If i was to go with ven's method, i'd end up with U475, a pissy little boat that never sank a ship - was used in a training flotilla it seems... |

I use SH3 Commander, and when I select a flotilla and get the drop-down list of available boats, I count them and roll a die. Totally random.

U-52 for me!
A while, a friend and I were cooperating on a project which involved building a large scale model of a Type VII U-boat, when it came time to pick a number for the boat, we decided to simply combine our lucky numbers and see what comes up. As it turns out, U-52 was indeed a Type VIIb, and I'm still very involved in the project today. |

U-23 for me, or numbers like 303, 505 123 etc... I find it hard to get emotionally attatched to just some random number.

U-93 shall always be mine.
BUT, if I were to do what you did, my U-boat ID would be U-645. ![]() |
