Hello,
I've got problems with my deck gun: First it takes nearly 2 minutes to reload each shell; Second, when I issue the command to man the deck gun, no one goes to the stations! The gun will not fire unless I actually go down and aim and fire it, but at 2 minutes for each reload, it takes too long. I seem to recall a post on this but could not find it--any advice would be apprecated ![]() Thanks |

You have to drag your to best gunners into the deck gun spots IIRC.
for faster reloads. |

Ah the good old rate of fire debate. :hmm:
First as has been suggested drag your best gunner qualified sailors into the gun slots. It also helps to have a ranking officer with gunnery training on the bridge. Secondly have you added any mods ? Some of them alter the rate of fire of the deck gun to a 'realistic' level. If you dont like the rate of fire you will have to fix this yourself. Ill let the mod folks explain that because frankly Im clueless when it comes to that sort of thing. |

Thanks I'll drag them there--I do have have one of the major mods loaded--I'll check. Just a bit annoying that my rate is so slow.

I most always fire the gun myself. The AI gunners just waste too many shells....

From Clear the Bridge by Richard O'Kane, page 325 (my emphasis added):
"The shoot provided a good example for my argument against having a single gun forward, since at one point while we were opening the range, our 4-inch came against the stops short of the conning tower and would not bear. With the slow rate of fire, about seven seconds per round, it was impossible to stay on the yacht for more that one or two hits after Mel had spotted the splashes on, and only eight sure hits were observed." If O'Kane thought 7 seconds was a slow rate of fire, 2 minutes is way too long between reload times. I know this has been discussed in other threads, but this quote seems pretty definitive to me. |

I read O'Kane's book several times.. the last many years ago unfortunately. but it's funny how some of these things stick with you... more as an impression or "understanding" of what it should be, than as specific sources for reference. Unfortunately, that doesn't carry many usenet or web board debates. ![]() JD |

![]() Even the Iowa's 16"/50 guns could do a couple of rounds per minute. ![]()

In perfect weather, 7 seconds is slow. In 6-foot seas washing over the deck, it's darned fast. The game doesn't know the difference.

But I agree, if it's taking two minutes something is wrong. Even Beery's much-complained-about ROF is only 23 seconds.

![]() I hate the early-war conning towers cuz they screw up the fire arcs on my sampan killers! I LOVE sinking fishing boats with autocannons!
