The caption says experimental submarine ss-533.The sole Beluga (Russian Makrel’)-class (Project 1710) trials submarine, SS-533, inactive at Sevastopol’ since 1997, was stricken during late 2001

Ahh the beluga. one of my all time favorites. a beautiful sub. to bad it went to rust

Its beluga class and the pic TLAM posted is sitting next to alrosa a modified kilo class.

Now upon futher review of that pic I have another question, WTF is THAT THING parked next pier up from the Kilo, docked next to the Julliet SSG?

Think that may be the accomadation ship i know that had a few converted hulks made up to house sailors, but im not 100% on that.

It was indeed a very unique looking submarine.

correct me if im wrong (yes you kapitan) but i belevie that the sub was built at leningrad but was assinged to the black sea fleet (sevastepol). it was only used as a trials sub and i dont think it was armed. so yes Sevastepol/Balacalva was its only homeport. (Balaclava being the "navy" docks/sub bunker across town towards the south)

Yes it was only based at sevstopol built not only to test new equipment but also doubled up as a training vessel.
