Type VII or type IX
The most famous U-boat of WWII was the type VIIc; in SH3 the type VII is used to sink ships in and around the U.K. The type IX is the long range much larger U-boat used to sink ships in the South Atlantic. Both have their advantages the type IX is much larger and in my opinion it is way cooler looking. The type VII is faster newer and in SH3 you can sink more ships due to the fact that all missions are in the North Atlantic. What do you think the best U-boat is?

I prefer the IX series boats. Drive one right and it's a true preadator. Definitely not as nimble as a VII, but once she puts her nose down it takes no time to hit 150m. You have plenty of ordanance, a larger crew, more fuel, room to tie up Bernard so he stays out of the way... Just don't get caught on the surface by anything, and stay the blazes away from anywhere you can't put 200m above the deck.

I prefer the smaller VII's. They don't hold as much ordnance, but they are more maneuverable, and generally a bit faster underwater.
If the Type IID held just a couple more torpedoes, and was just a touch faster both surfaced and submerged, it would be the IDEAL boat for around the British Isles.

I agree, IID is a nice boat.
I prefer the VIIB Dont see the point in the C, slower. Easy for shortish patrols, and can get good tonnage in a VII aswell as making a mess of smaller ports. IX cant be swung around ina port when DDsare saying hello the not so nice way. (Btw anyone know how to automaticlaly get a ourse plotted on the Kiel cannel, is tkaing me ages to get through there atm)

For Kiel Canal tell navigator to plot course while you are still at the dock (I can't remember exact details).
I'm presently revisitng the VII. Nice boat and getting excellent tonnage. Will upgrade to IXD when that is available. I don't like the view from the bridge of the VII. ![]()

I prefer the VIIC (U-93 is my number).
Sure, may have less of what you need, but I pull raids, not wild goose chases across half the damn ocean. ![]() Best of luck in your next patrol, Kaleun. |

Depends on What your good at? If you like to raid ports and patrol coasts, then i would choose the VIIC, Cause of its size and abulity to dive quicker then the IX series. Plus you can create the U-Flak boat, which is awesome at taking down Enemy Planes, which r the u-boats worse fear.
But if You like spending weeks even months at sea and makeing your wife and mistress worried then i would choose a sub from the IX series. There great for crossing the Atlantic and going after convoys. they also carry more torpedos and have the more powerfull 105mm deckgun, but you wont need that once the merchants become ARMED merchants. I drive the IXB, but when the IXD2 comes out i will be using that. And remeber when you go patrolling the MED use the VIIC, cause the MED is alot smaller. |

Second, it is slightly lengthened which allows you to add very useful things later in the war, things like schnorkels, radar, extra AA guns, etc. As for getting through the Kiel canal, here is what you do: Before you even start your engines, go to the map screen, click on your navigator, and then click on the icon for search patterns. You will see three: A standard search pattern, Kiel In, and Kiel Out. Click on 'Kiel Out', and that will plot an automatic course through the canal for you. On your way back in, place a waypoint *EXACTLY* on the point marked 'Kiel Inbound', then hit the 'Kiel In' search pattern.
