Agreed, I tried it in english once and it just wasn't as immersive.

Its almost like a different movie. The 'point of view' and phrases used are an interesting insight on the culture of that day (60's) [meaning when the movie was made not WWII].
The movie "Das Boot" was made in 1981 and released in 1982.

OMG!! Awesome! Rented it from Netflix a month ago and it has quickly become my favorite sub movie of all time! Going to record it on my DirectTV DVR.

I really love the theme song. Listening to it as I type.

I wonder what Das Boot would be like if the external U-Boat scenes are recreated with todays advance special effects.... :hmm:

The 'at sea' shots might look more realistic if the correct foam was CGIed in; the water is obviously not to scale.

My biggest complaint is the underwater footage; I think the movie would have been better without external scenes of depth charges exploding, torpedoes hitting ships, destroyers roaring overhead and the sub hitting the bottom. I would have preferred to see the crew reacting to things they couldn't see.

On a related note, I bought an HD-DVD player for my XBOX360 for $200 and have been enjoying it (as much as it can be enjoyed given the crappy selection of movies), and then I noticed that U-571 is available on HD-DVD. Makes the purchase worth it right there, I plan to order it POSTHASTE.
