I never ever use it, ONLY! if my normal Periscope breaks..
So what do you guys use it for? And also while we are on the subject, does using the O scope for attacks work just as well as the P scope? When my P scope is damaged and I lock onto a target it sometimes loses the target so I keep hitting L until I ready to fire. |

The Obs scobe is actually a better tool than the Periscope because it's smaller. It works just aswell as the Peri for targetting purposes and it has a better viewing angle, very useful for spotting planes.
Now, that said, if you conduct long range submerged attacks then the Peri is the tool for you as it has better magnification but for short range submerged attacks the Obs is the tool to use. I always use the Obs scope regardless. ![]()

TBH, I always though the attack periscope is the smaller, more harder to spot. Why use bigger, easielly detectable scope for attacks?

Inside a convoy, it is easier and quicker to find targets with the O scope. try it a couple of times and see what works best for you.

The Observation periscope is bigger than the Attack periscope. I do not know if the game actually models the difference in the light gathering capabilities between the two apertures but the Observation periscope was better in low light conditions. Also the Observation periscope was able to be elevated more than the attack periscope. I wonder if, in real life, if the Observation periscope was used for photography? One thing to be very careful of in this game… If you have the habit of using the Observation periscope and the Attack periscope, be sure that you double check to see that you have lowered the Observation periscope when you lower the attack periscope. Not that anyone here would be dumb enough to lower the attack periscope and forget that the observation periscope is still up…no you would really have to be dumb to do that….Trust me, it aint a good thing to do <hanging head in shame> ![]() |

Right that settles it, I was wrong about the respective sizes of each optical view.

***The periscope is the only means for a submerged U-boat to peer out into the sky and scan the horizon for surface activity. The majority of boats were fitted with two periscopes – an attack periscope for spotting and targeting surface vessels, and an observation periscope for scanning the sky and taking navigational bearings.*** -- www.uboataces.com

The observation periscope is meant for just that-observation. In real life it had a wider field of vision, allowed in more light, and the lens could be cranked up 85 degrees to look for badnasty flying things. Also it was easier to raise it and look around than to climb up into the conning tower to use the attack 'scope.
The game doesn't make a distinction where light is concerned, but all the other things are modelled. If you click on things to get around (as opposed to just hitting keys) the O-'scope really does become easier to use to look around just before you surface.

I believe also that many times they used both scopes at once to increase their security.

I usually end up getting run over in convoys and my attack scope destroyed.
then I switch to the O scope to get my butt out of there, and still make a kill or two. |
