Default Shallow waters convoy ambush

Hello all! I just encountered my first convoy in the career I am playing. I found it just off the port of Hartpool, a large convoy with at least 4 ascorts (maybe more) and perhaps a dozen merchants. Since I have read many threads about convoy attacks I knew that it could be suicide to attack them in shallow waters (about 40 - 60m), but since it was my first I thought I should save and give it a go. I went to silent running, plot a nice perpendicular course (i play at 100% realism GWX) and as soon as I got at about 2km from 2 large merchants roughly in the front of the convoy I fired two torpedoes at each, made an 180 turn and opened my ears to hear the explosions. Surprisingly every torpedo I fired hitted home. Allthough I remained at periscope depth none of the escorts seemed to coming into my direction (I think they didn't even started to looking for me except for the search lights). I brought my periscope slowly above the water and saw a large cargo directly behind me so I fired my stern tube at it and i scored another hit. The funny thing is that none of the ships left in the convoy after my first attack started evasive manouvers.

Is that normal? Does the actual state of the war plays a role in the escorts efficiency? (I am in January '40).
In GWX are there only the historical convoys mentioned in the manual or the game creates also random convoys (as I imagine is the one I encountered)?

Anyway this game (especially with GWX) is completely awesome. I am a sub simulation veteran you could say (the first i played was silent service II) but I am completely stunned by this game and GWX. And when I saw the most famous ship of my country (Pisa Class "Georgios Averof") was included in GWX I was even more stunned than before.

Greetings everybody from Greece

p.s. sorry about my spelling and grammar

Yasu, Kaleun!
Some convoys are easy. But don't count on that. Congratulations on a splendid attack! Good hunting in the future.

Hi
Yes there are random convoys too
Yel also the date of the war does play in the escorts ability
As the war progresses they get a lot tougher

" The British have stopped making mistakes " :rotfl:

The Averoff was built by our Greek team member
Labour of love

Glad you are enjoying yourself

The word enjoy is probably inadequate to describe my feelings when the torps wrecked those large merchants... And since today is Saturday, my fav team has just beaten their bitter rivals in the Greek League and I have rent "Das Boot" Director's cut for the weekend it seems that I'm gonna have a splendid weekend

I am anxiously awaiting to progress the game to 1941 so I can move to the flotilla based in Greece. You see, we greeks don't often have the oportunity to see our country as part of a game and that's a two thumbs up for me for GWX!

I have visited the Averof once when I was in school. Awesome experience! I don't remember much since It was a long time ago but I remember I was deeply impressed by her.
When I was even younger my sister took me on a field trip with the girl scouts to Poros where we visited a warship. I can't be sure if that ship was also the Averof but that's the impression I have. Maybe someone knows if the Averof was stationed at Poros before she was made a museum at Faliro. Here is the only photo I have from that ship. Don't say that I was not a nice boy with that helmet on ))

Anyway , nice to have found you guys ... )

In 1940, you can get away with bloody murder! That same attack in say, 42 or onward.. the outcome would probably have been much different.

I am in the moment in GWX on my 5th patrol out of Salamis and I enjoy very much the nice colours from the Med. (and also it's a lot warmer than the North Atlantic ) I have sailed in these waters irl for a few years and the sunrises look very close to reality. Sometimes I stay at TCx1 for 15/20 mns just enjoying it while I have a coffee/cigarette break after some night action... very relaxing.

As a fellow Greek (living and working in England but that's a totally different story) I say to you welcome to SubSim

RHN Georgios Averof was built by VonHelsing another fellow Greek and member of the GWX Development Team. It's a real beauty and Von did one hell of a job. Thanks to him and the rest of the GWX Team Greece is properly represented in the game as you can actually find Greek ships in almost every theater of operations. Actually if you use SH3Cmd and you select the option for the use of real ship names you will see a lot of merchant ships with greek names (actual ones that got sunk during WWII). On a small chat I had with Von some time ago he said he plans to build the Aetos Class Destroyers as well for GWX fo I have my fingers crossed, as if these ships are built then there will be the whole Royal Hellenic Navy of the time in the game.

The convoys I have encountered (it's now 41) have mostly only had light escort such as a couple of flower corvettes. Once I encountered a convoy with two "real" Destroyers. The DC'ed me quite some time but I (as usual:p ) escaped without a scratch. On my way home now, have sunk 40000 tons , 90% realism.
