Now why would I want to put on the fictional adventures of a captain with no name at the same time I'm fighting the war for real all on my own?:rotfl:

Hehe, yep. Rodger that Steve. Well it had me so fooled I submerged when I heard a ping(comming from television, unbeknownst to me.) Then I thought, wait.................wait a min. I was on the surface,..............I cant get pinged on the surface.

I then realized my folly, and turned to see my folly.

Yes, what a great film though. And im so pleased with the uncut version and it was only $35 at amazon. So much more, and I was surprised at the Captains reaction to the waving girlfriend up in that "off limits" warehouse as they were leaving port.
And her lover there on the aft deck just standing there not waving afraid to expose their affiliation. But the Captain sure seemed suspicious of her.

Prochnow is excellent but this is Wolfgang Peterson's Masterpiece. He's made other movies but none have compared to the craftsmanship he displays in Das Boot. His Magnum Opus.

<reviving dead thread>

Reading Clay Blair's works for the first time finally. Great stuff. Read this passage tonight, which I found interesting.

"German submariners were delighted with Buchheim's wartime art, photographs, and heroic stories, but they were appalled by his postwar writings and the film. They denounced him for opening the film Das Boot with scenes of a wildly drunken orgy at the officer's club in Lorient; for the negative, defeatist, anti-military tone of the book and film; and for the implied criticism of Donitz. Two U-boat skippers, Karl-Friedrich Merten and Kurt Baberg, were so enraged by Buchheim's "non-fiction" U-boat history that in 1985 they published an entire book (Nein ! So War Das Nicht) pointing out Buchheim's errors and/or misleading statements."

(Keeping dead thread alive)

Try playing the GW mod and then watching Das Boot. Your ears really perk up when the scene where they've just torpedoed the convoy ("Out of the way.... I think we hit her! We hit her! Quiet!) and when they order a dive ("Diving Stations!")....you'll her some awful familiar sounds

I havent watched it yer (YES!!!, I know it's a crime and I?m repenting already), but my friend promised me that he'll find a DVD "somewhere" in my country (let's just say that our DVD Huts aren't loaded with the best fish).

First I'll watch it in English! Then I'll watch it in GErman wth English subtitles! Then I?ll watch it again, both versions, a couple of times

Das Boat =

EDIT:

You wouldn't belive it, but I was shoping for my parents today and I stopeed by the local news agent to get my fathers paper, when I saw that they were selling a movie with some newspaper. I loooked more closely and you have three guesses which movie was it!

DAS BOAT!!!

Unfortunatelly it's only German with Slovene subtitles so, I?ll still be on a look out for the ULTIMATE VERSION!!!

The good news is, that it's the Directors cut and has extra footage! YEY!!!

The Director's Cut has 1 hour more footage than the original. The "Original, Uncut Version", or Extended version (or Miniseries Version) is twice the length of the original, or 1-1/2 hours more than the Director's Cut.

If it's at all possible, watch the Uncut version! While the Director's Cut is good, and the extra scenes do add a lot, EVERY SINGLE SCENE is extended in the Uncut version. You learn far far more about the people, boat and struggle than you do in the Director's Cut.

It's well worth the effort in tracking down.

Has anybody here watched the SuperBit edition of Das Boot? It's basically a slightly shorter version than the directors cut, but with completely remastered video and sound....(Nothing extra on the disc - not even a fancy menu - alll available space go to video and sound) I played it on my home theater system on a 90" screen and My Oh My it makes your skin crawl

That being said - I prefer watching the mini series edition - as others have said you loose so much information in the abridged versions.

I have the directors cut, didn't realize there was another longer version. I did find this on the internet, I guess this is the longer version right?

"Das Boot - The Director's Cut Original Uncut Version - 2-DVD Set, Length: 293 minutes."

Wonderful movie, and I also would highly recommend it to anyone.

I just bought the long version a few days ago, and it's definetly ten thousand times better than the "Director's Cut" I got a long, long time ago. First movie on DVD I ever bought to stretch over several DVDs.

I full-heartedly recommend that whoever wants to buy this movie gets the longer version. The Director's Cut is for the Hollywood movie-lovers, as it focuses on the fighting. The long version keeps nearly everything (my copy is 4 hours 42 minutes long, wasn't the original TV series 6 hours long?).

So now I guess I'm off to sell the short Hollywood-ish version. Who needs it anymore!

Ive got 2 verisons of this great movie. The original uncut version which is 4hrs 42mins long and the other one is the director's cut which is 3hrs 20mins. It just gets better with every viewing. I just love getting in the mood of the film by turning off all lights makingthe room dark and just losing myself in the film.
It has to be watch with german audio and with subtitles, thats if you dont speak german.
