This is true. But usually you don't get credit for "natural" sinkings.

Like others, I too have been perplexed by the grey icon when a) I had identified the ship, b) I received the telltale "Ship sunk" message and c) credit was recorded in my logs.

The consistent thing here seems to be the bad weather. Perhaps, DeepSix's "gap" theory is correct. Sounds plausible.
