Default Trying Real Nav

Well, my saves got corrupted, so I did a fresh install and then installed Wolves of Steel 1.06.04h.

I decided to be like the cool kids and try out Real Navigation.

Holy cow. I am totally blind. I can't figure out where I am and I can't tell where I am in relation to other ships. That map has become fairly useless and everything is going to rely on dead reckoning. I tried no map contacts years ago with SH3 but have not done it in SH5. Very hard to unlearn using the map for planning tactical stuff.

Also, it appears that the Send Patrol Report button is gone from the radioman. How do you respond to BdU when they ask for your position and status?

So I'm running the latest Wolves of Steel mod. 1.06 04h.

It's pretty good! I love the new explosion sounds. Also it seems more stable than before; only one CTD so far. However I am now sticking with the recommended TC limits in the .cfg file. 512 max.

I am on 100% realism with no map updates.

Wow, this is a totally different game! Much harder. And now you aren't just killing time wiating for the uboat to transit - you have to watch your stopwatch and constantly be taking bearings to make sure you don't run into land.

The game is now played from the bridge/scope instead of from the map. Much harder to estimate range and speed.

I'm going to have to learn how to use the attack wheel!

You can always ask the Navigator for a DR position or Celestial fix at any time. Also in the Automations tab you can select the script to have the Navigator take the appropriate sightings at various intervals like dawn, midday, sunset etc or short interval DR fixes during combat manoeuvring. That's Emil's job...otherwise he will eat up rations for nothing!

good to know about the scripts.

Seems like it takes 20 minutes to get a dead-recknoning fix and who knows how long for a astrological one.

The time taken for the Navigator to complete a fix and also the accuracy of that fix can be changed in the OFEV. The time and accuracy of the fix is generally set to reflect the time it would take to get up on deck and take the sighting with a sextant and then do the required mathematical calculations etc. If you want, you can set it so you can get instant GPS accurate positions but I'm sure that by doing so would detract from the realism trying to be achieved.

The button up on the top right of the hud . ''Travel Mode" . Don't travel with it enabled and you wil get notifications about close proximity to land . If you have it enabled then it disables warnings such as land and shallow water . The other buttons you need to have enabled at different times is the TC1 on any message box messages and the button the the right of it .
I wouldn't recommend travelling at more than 256X time compression .
So if you are travelling at 256 or 128 recommended max and your sub is about to hit land the game will warn of close proximity to land and the game will drop to 1x TC . Usually you will have time to go into 3d view and hit emergency reverse .
real navigation is the best mod for SH5 imo . I have been lost at night trying to enter Kiel . Sometimes if conditions are bad its best to all stop and TC256 or 128 until the weather clears . The game is totally different with real nav and no external views . Now light Bouys and lighthouses are really useful .

Here is one of the best mods made for SH5 . Harbor Charts . Enable the maps relevant to your operations area .
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...ghlight=charts

Click on the radioman and ask him to send a patrol report .

Yeah I figured the delay is for realism.

But it is very disorienting to me right now trying to figure out where I am and where other ships are in relation to me.

Now I just start drawing on the map at any arbitrary point to make a tactical plot. It doesn't matter where I really am as long as I can figure out where they are.

You are aware that, when it comes to an engagement , your position in SH world is quite irrelevant?

Yeah, that's why I said:
