Default The War Is Over

I am sad to report that after sinking 400,000 GRT, my 3 year career as commander of U-796 has come to and end. My final patrol began in March, 1945, so I extended it with several refits at Penang. I attacked numerous convoys and task force operations off Sri Lanka until I exhausted our torpedoes. We then sank one old freighter with AA gun fire.

"When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer."

Here's to the crew of U-796...

Meanwhile, in the real war it appears only 6 Monsun Gruppe boats survived to Germany's surrender in 1945.

Quote:
Six boats remaining in Japanese territory were taken over by the Imperial Japanese Navy when Germany surrendered in 1945.[29]
  • U-181 (type IXD2 cruiser) became I-501 and was scrapped at Singapore after Japan surrendered.
  • U-862 (type IXD2 cruiser) became I-502 and was scrapped at Singapore after Japan surrendered.
  • UIT-24 (originally Cappellini, then Aquilla III) became I-503 and was found at Kobe when Japan surrendered and scuttled by the US navy in Kii Suido.
  • UIT-25 (originally Torelli) became I-504 and was found at Kobe when Japan surrendered and scuttled by USN in Kii Suido.
  • U-219 (type XB minelayer) became I-505 and was scrapped at Jakarta after Japan surrendered.
  • U-195 (type IXD1 oiler) became I-506 and was scrapped at Jakarta after Japan surrendered.
Some others tried to return to Germany when the end was near. Some made it. For U-boats anywhere in the world, survival was a difficult proposition.

I wish I would have had the acoustic torpedoes earlier in my career. I also missef the deck gun when I received the Typ XXX U-Boat.

I had some great times on this campaign. On one mission, I briefly surfaced next to a freighter (running too fast while going to periscope depth) and the destroyer escort's gunfire sank the freighter.

I surfaced alongside a troop ship, almost rubbing it, and fired a salvo of torpedoes, set to fast/magnetic/000 bearing/2 meters depth, which sunk two destroyers as the crossed in front of the troop ship.

I had an acoustic torpedo get loose and circle back. Luckily I was plotting solutions on other ships in the convoy and saw it. There was an armed merchant close by so I surfaced and made a run for it at 18 knots. I submerged at the last moment possible to 25 meters and ordered all stop. The torpedo took out the merchant's steering and propulsion. I found it drifting much later in that mission, several hundred miles from last recorded position.

My favorite, however, was attacking convoys on the surface with both deck gun and torpedoes and attacking destroyers from dead astern with acoustic torpedoes.

Interesting. I would have thought it would de-spawn.
