Default What sub games are really missing.....

In fact all naval games should have this were you are in command of a sea going vessel. For as long as I've been playing these games there was always something missing that just didn't make it feel like the real thing...something except steel bulkheads and sweaty crew all around me that is.
It's the ability to actually here yourself give the command to the crew when you select a command with the keyboard or mouse. Every movie, documentary or book I've ever read always has the orders given then repeated back to insure there was no mistaking the order given. In the case of the games however all you do is click a mouse or hit a keystroke and you hear the crew repeating the order back to you without actually hearing the order that was given. Somehow it doesn't seem the same when all you do is push a button to give an order and you only hear the crew answer back. By not hearing your own command you also don't know if you hit the wrong key by mistake. Something I tend to do regularly when hitting the number keys for speed.
How cool would that be to have a voice mod that spoke the commands as you gave them.

I wonder if Dragon Speak could be used in anyway to affect this?

Has this ever been brought up or looked into in the past?

I'm surprised there is not a key emulation sound file attached to these games for this very purpose.
All first person shooter games are based on keystroke and sound emulations.
When you pull the trigger you here the gun fire or when strike or stab at another player it has a sound associated with it.

re-record the sound files for the crew commands and add in a captain's voice in front of the crew voice maybe? That would be simple i would think, however, using an actual voice command by microphone would be something else altogether.

So when you hit a new course on your compass and your crew confirms the order...."New course 355 degrees aye, aye" or when you select a depth they have a command line for every degree on the compass or every foot or meter on the depth gauge??
That's incredible.

Not every foot/meter. I think it's every twenty feet/meters that they have recorded. They do seem to have recorded every degree on the compass though.

Your right, I wasn't thinking about the increments used in the depth meters.

It's amazing how they get those details right yet screw the pooch on the battles so badly. Thank god for Lurker and the RSRDC otherwise we'd be stuck with horrible battle recreations.

I don't know of any way to easiely do what OP is proposing. But why not do away with the button pushing and mouse clicking entirely? Instead of listening to a machine-generated "you" speaking the commands, just speak the commands. Then the crew repeats them, and executes them.

The capability to do exactly that - voice command - exists for SH3 and SH4 through the use of an external background program (freeware), and is built into SH5. For SH5, you need a mod to enable it. But for SH4, just google "sh4speech." Read the description, download the software, and start actually giving orders to your crew. It's a far more immersive experience than typing at a keyboard.

For anyone who is interested, I will be happy to provide more information and assistance in setting up. All it takes is a cheap $20 headset from the Shack to get started.

Try it, and you'll never want to go back to pushing buttons again!

I can just see the looks coming from my wife now as she hears me talking to my laptop....
she'll be calling to find out if talking to your laptop is grounds for having me committed.

Just an FYI: I'm almost sure that the crew sound files don't have a separate recording for every foot/meter on the depth gauge or every degree on the compass. Ubisoft probably just recorded the voice actors saying the numbers 0-9 as separate sound files and the game just stitches these together as needed. This process cuts down on recording time and money. One could use the same strategy to create a "voice" for the boat's commander.

Do the modders think this is feasable?

How about voice talent. I do a dead on Hank Hill, as well as Stephen Hawking, a fair Arnold Schwarzenegger, decent Homer Simpson, and many other characters

"Do the modders think this is feasable?"

One modder apparently does.
