Got my type XXI 3 cruises ago. What a piece of work.
This last convoy I hit just north of Ireland I just drove straight in. Escorts didn't spot me, but aircraft did and bombed my position. So I just went flank speed and started spitting out torpedoes in the midst of the convoy like a cowboy with a six-shooter. I was nailing ships and weaving in and out at 15 knots. It was like a skier doing slalom. It was such chaos something happened I have never seen before - the escorts were depth charging where I was not. The AI was actually confused and bombing randomly. Those escorts had no idea subs could move like mine! ![]() Eventually they were on to me, and now they've got those pesky hedgehogs and they nailed me down to 67% hull integrity and killed one of my creeper motors. That's okay-dokey, though, because I had loaded up with 8 or more Type V homing torpedoes. We were spitting those things out faster than watermelon seeds on a hot summer day. Eventually all the chasers were gone and I went back and re-visted a couple of tankers that had not yet sunk. I ended the mission with some 44,000+ tons sunk including 7 warships, a whale factory ship, a large tanker, and a few smaller tankers. Really the acoustic torps are way overpowered. I actually watched one on the tactical map bounce off the screws of a destroyer 2 or three times, stop in the water, and start up again chasing again! ![]() I like my Type XXI! ![]() Steve |

You think that's cool, I charged into a convoy at 20 knots in the Bismarck and wiped out the entire thing.

![]() I've wiped out entire convoys with the Type IX early war, but it would be nice to unleash broadsides. ![]() Steve |

I love the XXI, I see it as the icing on the cake of my career. If you make it to 1944 alive though...
I only wish that advertised auto hydrophone targeting thingy worked. Apparently the real life thing could shoot underwater without the need for a periscope to get a target solution |

The system required the Nibelung to go active, however briefly, and while the few pulses would likely remain undetected it was not an entirely passive system. Also it is not clear whether the whole setup was actually fully operational at the war end. A number of planned "bells and whistles" for the XXI such as Ursel definitively were not.

I'll just assume that my uboat was stuck without the new sonar system and had to make due with magical homing torpedoes.
![]() I'm tempted to load the entire compliment with homing torpedoes and then approach a convoy and launch off all 6 bow tubes at the convoy broadside at 15 degree increments, reload and repeat, and sit back and watch the fireworks. I'll either hit a lot of ships or whichever ship has the worst mechanic is going to be blown into very small pieces. Steve |

I hate trying to mod games in these modern times, it can get so complex and require so many different programs in some cases.

Tonight I made an attack on a convoy in my Type XXI. But a destroyer tossed a side-launch DC that landed right on top of us.
Destroyed the fuel tank and both diesels. Took me down to 55% HI. I successfully took down 7 escorts with homing torpedoes and successfully evaded the rest to get away. But I could not get home since my engines were dead. I decided to surface every day for 3 days and radio home, then submerge and sit out the day. I figured if I could last that long I will pretend help arrived and was able to get our engine fixed enough to get home. Steve |
