Our Defence Minister today announced the closure of the Tarin Kot base Australia has manned for almost 12 years. In a lot of ways this is pleasing news, but the future of the province they leave behind is almost certain to be a rocky one. I'll be stunned and amazed if there is not significantly more violence when we go and the local warlords start arcing up against the Afghan security forces we've been training. |

Because they can't sunbathe or play golf in Oz?
Other than that we in the UK have heard little or nothing about them being in Afghan. Still, better off at home and leave the locals to do their thing.

![]() My point being they don't have to be in Afghanistan to do those things because they really are available in Oz.

![]() The lack of clear goals outside the original goal of lets go after Osama Bin Laden is the main reason that we should be getting out. The biggest issue in Afghanistan is their lack of economic drivers. Without their opium trade they get very little income from external trade. Without commodities to trade, they don't have much of a leg to stand on on their own. I foresee years of the West paying aid to warlords when simply don;t care whether the Taliban come back into power, as long as they can make money from something. Drugs, weapons, donkey crap, they don't care. |

Personally I think that perhaps we should stay in Afghanistan. The Taliban have people planted in the Afghan army. But, thinking realistically, could we actually do anything? We killed Osama, now what?

I saw on the news that John Kerry visited an Afghan woman who owns a company that manufactures soccer balls(Football to the rest of humanity). I could not help but feel sorry for this woman because there is no doubt that once the US and allies leave she will not be allowed to run a company and might get harshly punished for having done so.
The Afghans that do benefit from our presence I feel sorry for because what they have now will not last long.We let those people down as much as our own troops. |
