Every year, on Christmas day, a local channel here in Los Angeles broadcasts a burning fireplace for several hours (it gives the station staff a chance to spend the holiday with family); also, I believe HSN broadcasts a similar fireplace scene during Christmas...

Fireplaces like these are common in older houses. Ours is a lot smaller though
![]() They were built so people could actually sleep on top of them during winter since effective insulation was still a couple of discoveries away. |
