You're misunderstanding the purpose of the TDC. The idea is to enter the data of range, bearing, angle on the bow, and speed, then click the button to start the computer. What the TDC does when you click the tracking button is to continually calculate where the target ship is BASED ON THE DATA IT HAS at the time the tracking button is clicked. If the data is not accurate or the target changes course and/or speed after the last input, then the calculated position will be wrong. The idea is to let it track the target until it's closer, then make another periscope observation, clicking the button off, locking the target, then clicking it on again to give it newer data. When it gets close enough to shoot you turn off the automatic tracking, raise the periscope and lock on again, then fire.

Automatic mode doesn't have the firing options manual has. In automatic mode, you're stuck with using the scope.

In case I haven't already done so, Welcome aboard. Our navigation officer needs a map folder. Get on that, he has lots of poorly folded maps.

um ..... you can still use the tdc to track from your last known scope observation - and shoot if you feel confident that the target hasn't changed heading or speed. You can also track with sonar and send info to the tdc without popping up a scope - but that's just as iffy.

I didn't realize you could do that in auto mode. How do you do it?

Any data sent to the TDC, even in auto mode, will be tracked if you click the light on in the bottom right corner of the scope mini-console. Now, if you're reckless, like I've been known to be, you forget to turn that light off when looking at a new target and think to yourself, 'Gee, that destroyer sure looks a lot closer than 4k yds!'

Crash! Bulkheads damaged, attack periscope destroyed, forward torpedo tubes destroyed, pumps destroyed, ice cream machine .... .....

Do you need to have a lock with the periscope, or can you lock on from the map?

I've always either had a peri-lock or I've transmitted data from sonar. Oddly, I've never given thought to locking via the map and am somewhat embarrassed to admit I never thought *that* was an option.

edwardallen....watch the range readout for your tdc, let it close until you feel comfortable with firing, depending on how far off the targets track you are. If the range starts to increase then the target has passed you and you will be running out of time for a shot.

Also, the arrow on the bottom dial of the TDC is the torpedo run angle. I've never really used the auto tdc, aside from some experimentation, but I know that the arrow color is actually dependent on the gyro angle. Therefore, fire when the arrow indicates a straight torpedo run (or close to straight anyways).
