Default Happy birthday Doom!

I've known you for only 19 years yet it feels like a lifetime. Maybe that's because that was my lifetime.
You were the father I never had.

The demon-punching shotgun-wielding space marine kind of father, I mean.

Happy birthday, Doomguy.

Used to play it over at my Nephew who had his PC hooked to a stereo installation with speakers as big as I was back then.

you could say the experience did blow me away

My first FPS, well actually second apparently but I can't remember the first. Used to play it at lunchtimes at school on LAN, we'd usually have two machines running Doom and a third running either Doom SP, or Civ.
Many lunchtimes spent in Deathmatch or occasionally Co-Op, doing things like luring the Cyberdemon into a lift or telefragging my opponent.
First place I heard of 'Camping' or the WASD setup, or as it was known to us at the time the 'Quake configuration'. Good days, good laughs.

Always preferred the Quake game when it came out but that was about three years after DOOM.

Quake had a other and a better graphics engine! In that time, that mean a better game in several aspects. My first fps was wolfstein (but not when it first come out). My copy of Doom II had a wolfstein 2 level or something like that. Still I played more Doom II that the first one.
And I also remember the homage payed by Duke Nukem III to Doom!

I remember sitting in a 12'x12' tent in Kosovo playing Doom - two player, with a bin liner taped down the middle of the screen on our 14" colour portable telly so we couldn't see where the other player was. It worked well. The setup also worked well with Downhill Mountain Biking, but not Worms.

Me and a mate did a similar thing with some card and string for a 2 player game of...I think it was Syphon Filter.
