I'm not much of a naval game person, space navies are a different story, but I am a fan of RPGs and simulation games in general and loved Silent Service on the NES back when.
Having come across effingcontroller's "Let's Play Silent Hunter III" on YouTube however and seeing not only how great it looked but how exciting it was to watch I started checking to see if I could add it to my collection. While my antique PC doesn't come close to being up for SH4 or 5 it is suited nicely for III. After silently hunting it down, inspecting the manual and installing it, I loaded up the first Naval Academy mission and took a look around the boat and area with the external cam. By the time I finished the Flak tutorial I was hooked deep. I've never seen something look as insanely good on my PC before as watching from the seafloor looking up as a burning aircraft by pure chance crashed directly overhead. Upon completing the Academy missions I launched a career on 81% difficulty. I left event cam and external cam on for the cinematic value as seeing torps run and going external underwater to watch ships sink is one of the best parts. Left the noise meter on despite not understanding how to get use out of it or paying much attention to it to begin. Finally left WO assist on in part because it didn't make sense why he wouldn't be able to do that task and in part to help teach me to do it by double checking my work. Completed my first patrol, 10 days 9-3-39 to 9-13-39 out of Wilhelmshaven to AF87 and back. Had no luck in the zone itself as a storm blew in just as I reached the patrol area and I couldn't see or hear anything. I did sink a small Norwegian merchant on the way up, had to...it all but fell in my lap without my trying. Didn't know it's nationality at the time, couldn't see more than the outline in the dark, but it was out of Bergen headed straight at England so I consider it justified as it could've been British for all I knew at the time or supporting them. I won't make habit of sinking neutrals though and would like to have explained what some of the posts I've read here which say "command frowns on it in-game" mean. I'm also looking for a "fix" for the default flag and Bismarck textures but I've had no luck yet, any help would be appreciated. Hoping to be around a while, Vipre a.k.a "Hans Richter, Leutnant zur See" |

hello and a big welcome from everyone to the game. its always good to play stock for quite sometime to get your bearings in game. it will give you some decent senses for when you decide to mod your SH3 to bring it up to a much higher standard.
you will find endless information on this website about the game like hunting /evasion techniques, graphics boosters, super mods, solutions to bugs and answers to any possible question you could think of. personally i started the game 4 months ago and like you was completely hooked. i say it will take that long of constant playing in stock before you get really bored and want to start checking out the all the cool mods available and i wish you some happy sailing herr kaluen ![]() |

Thanks to all for the welcome.

My system lists everything as... XP SP3 Pentium 4 2.00GHz Ram 512 MB 64MB Nvidia GeForce3 Ti 200 ...while systemrequirementslab.com reports my video memory at 171.0 MB Regardless I'm either just meeting the Recommended requirements for SH3 or I'm slightly below. How well can I expect GWX to perform on such outdated specs? |

Is it my soul that calls upon my name? Wait, that doesn't sound like my soul. I'm firing my hyrdophone operator.
Glad to see that I've helped another addict on the way to salvation! If the core game is running okay on your machine, I'd give GWX a try. It does make some graphical enhancements, but generally, it adds more content and scripting to the game which shouldn't (probably) overload your system while at sea. For me, the biggest difference with the game after I loaded GWX was that it loaded slower on startup. However, the vanilla game is fine too if you're concerned your computer might explode or something. |

"If the core game is running okay on your machine" Core game runs fairly well, there's recently been a "twitch" in external view though that I think has more to do with low HD space than specs. Possible slow startup is no worry, FTL and Stronghold Kingdoms also take forever to load so I'm used to it. Once running however they both play smoothly. My main concern was excessive lag due to the 64mb card and only 512mb of system ram. I'm planning to give GWX a shot in spite of this as soon as I finish out my first career either at wars end or on the bottom. |

Hello!
GWX shouldnt do too much lag on that 64 mb gpu. I play with 64 mb integrated graphics on my laptop. For RAM, i have 4 gb. I dont know offhand how much you need for GWX. Some of the larger explosions, (i.e. Modern Tanker struck with 3 torpedos) i have to look away from because of the lag from the fire. But i'm not complaining. I love this game. Welcome Aboard! ![]()

GWX was designed to run on the same system specs as that of stock SH3 and will take a little longer to load....it is the addition of further mods that tends to impact heavily on some lower spec systems.
