And this is what makes the SOPA so ridiculous and reveals the lies of the creators. I think it is already today possible, under current US laws, to do a cease and desist if a site host materials that infringes copyrights.

The crippling of information, is the impedment of human progress.
This is why we are also outraged in Europe, as the majority of DNS servers are located in the US. So a law that some old farts in America propose, people who would certainly print out a webpage by putting their monitors onto a Xerox, would indeed have a global impact.
For example the German Piratenpartei (pirate party) does the same as wiki with their page today, as a sign of solidarity and to show that this law would also cripple us in the Old World.

The question is, why be dependent on only one site (wikipedia)?

I do a lot of open source research as part of my job, Wikipedia going down only cause a slight inconvenience.

I know your on our side, just using your comments as a jumping off point to encourage thought.

One site in a million, right?

Until another one, and another one.

We get pretty uppity against Euro and American governments here, how long before Mr. Stevens loses his site, because President Palin thinks we are being silly? Or El Jefe, of Crapistan does not like his mass grave photos being distributed, or Chairman Mao don't want good images of the Dalai Lama being shown...(wait, that censorship is already happening)....

Anyways.

I like to trash China and Russia. But that is where most the piracy sites are based...

Maybe we are the authoritarians...

We all might be hanging out on Subsim.ca at that point.

Having worked for a certain server hosting company, Ubisoft wouldn't even need to contact Neal. They can simply send a notice to the company that Neal rents the server from, and that company will unplug the server from the network until such time as the complaint is dealt with.

Heard on NPR this afternoon that the bill has lost support in Congress.

Yeah in it's present form, but it will be back as sure as casino bills in spite of consistent overwhelming public opposition.

The entertainment industry will happily sue teenagers for millions, to me that says there is no limit to what they will do to maintain their empire of crap.

Yeah, they will bury it in a truly important bill, just so it can't be voted down.

Or they will shove it up our rectums like they did with the Patriot act.

That has to be one of the best Downfall videos out there. The Disney line is pure brilliance.

Every American should call their senators and representative about this. I've done it, and it only takes a few minutes. Many of our Congressmen are too stupid or too venal to do the right thing on their own, so you have to do what you can to force them.

Someone posted that earlier already and I must ask the same question I did then:
What exactly is it about? It's definitily has very little to do with SOPA.

TotalBiscuit can give a better explain on what's wrong with that video:

Computers (and especially networked computers) are starting to annoy the people that are actually in charge.

Relevant article ("Lockdown: The coming war on general-purpose computing"):
http://boingboing.net/2012/01/10/lockdown.html

The article is a bit on the extreme side I think, but something to consider when these sorts of restrictions are considered being made law by one of the most powerful countries on the planet.

SOPA like all censorship is a bad idea. Hope the US congress comes to its senses and kicks this one to the kerb.
