Actually even that is a little short. The longest hit ever made on a moving target was by Scharnhorst on HMS Glorious at 26,465 yards, or 24,200 metres. You're right, they almost certainly wouldn't shoot at a submarine at that range, firstly because subs sit lower in the water and are harder to see, and secondly because they wouldn't waste their big-gun ammo on a target so hard to hit. On the other hand the US battleships Iowa and New Jersey did try to hit the Japanese destroyer Nowaki at more than 35,000 yards, or 32,000 metres, so you never know for sure what they'll actually do.

Dang! 35,000 yards! Close to 18nms!
That is amazing that they would fire at that distance to try to hit something as small as a destroyer at that range.

The time of flight for a 16"/50 shell at 35,000 yards is more than a minute. I've read that Nowaki would wait for the muzzle flash from the battleships and then turn and run in a different direction. I don't have a source for that, however. That said, they never hit Nowaki.

That account says that Iowa "closed with Katori", so the range was probably quite a bit less. On the other hand here is a discussion from a few years back that claims that Iowa did not hit Katori, at least with her main battery. That poster states that Iowa only hit a destroyer and an auxiliary ship with her secondary 5" guns. I'm still looking for a more detailed account. http://warships1discussionboards.yuku.com/topic/5270 [edit] A little further down the poster Tiornu states that Iowa's own after-action report claims they did hit Katori, and with the main battery. I used to correspond semi-regularly with Tiornu (real name Richard Worth) and own one of his books. I trust his judgement an qualifications, so it's probably true. Either way it's an interesting discussion.
