Did you check the date? By default GWX starts a career in August 1939, a month before that war starts. Since no country is an enemy, sinking any ship will make you an enemy of everyone, including Germany.

My thinking was not the date Steve because he mentioned it was the second patrol (ignoring the background noise

I think Steve has nailed it, it was as I returned from my first trip, I'm only outbound on my second trip as I type this.
