First time I got mad at SHIII for the first time since release

I mean honestly mad where I quit playing and started playing SHIV then still being mad turned off the pc and went to bed lol.

Maybe extremely frustrated is a better word.

Heres the situation;

Lead Destroyer, Troop Transport and Aux Cruiser hdg 90

Extremely rough seas but I managed to get decent information. So I was pretty positive on the ranges, speeds, bearings etc.

Saved before I attacked just because SHIII has been crashy lately (need to review my mods)

First attempt fired spread missed intended ship but hit aux cruiser, sunk...all was fine.... sunk 3 more ships later on and game crashed near Germany on my way home. (Does that mostly when I switching from 4k+ TC to normal RT).

Anyway so I'm annoyed.

I reload the game and have all the info still at had due to the notebook and pencil on my desk. I know I had to have mad errors somewhere due to my first attempt so I re-evaluate, get the same info returned....so I decide to estimate a bit, increase speed. etc, miss...reload game...more estimating...miss....reload game, take more time to gather more data....fire...torpedo detonated early and they started zig-zagging....reloaded game.....said ok.....ill basically do the fast 90 method....spead ahead of them got in perfect firing position perfect range....miss!! I went on to do this about 5 more times before I was disgusted and shut the game down.

Now normally I don't reload over and over like that...if I miss I miss etc.. but feeling slightly cheated by the games crashing nearly upon entering port... I reloaded. Being already irritated, i wasnt gonna miss targets that I'd already hit.

Hell I don't even feel like logging in today, maybe I'll nix that mission and move on.

SH3/4 and 5 have all had frustrating moments but GRRR!!!

Rant off....

Sorry.

Yes, that is frustrating. I once worked for hours on a game for a friend, only to have an electrical storm zap the power, and I hadn't remembered to save it. Today I live by the slogan "Save early, save often. Save, save, save. Then save again."

BossMark 06-24-11 01:45 PM

Yes I learnt the hard way as well about saving often, made it nearly all the way home after sinking nearly 30,000 tons of allied shipping only to get depth charged by 2 Destroyers.

Snestorm 06-24-11 03:46 PM

T'is better to save after important events, than before.
Good or bad, I don't want to have to do it again.
I feel your anger & frustration, It's justified.

Times like that have made me wonder if there is not a variable at work
we are not aware of.

You can repeat a save, do the exact samethings everytime and get different results also!

HW3 06-24-11 11:19 PM

That's why the first chance I get after a sinking, I make a save.:yep:

Sailor Steve 06-24-11 11:37 PM

The thing I find most irritating of all is when I hit 'Save' and then the game crashes.

I would consider that Dead Is Dead and end the career. I only save to protect against game crashes. But that's just me.

I am pretty sure there is such a variable. I have no evidence, but subjectively speaking... I am working on a single mission called "Denmarkstrait"

After several "load it and try it out, save it here and there" there is no other explanation for the results I get...

I save semi-regularly during travelling and ALWAYS after anything I consider to be a significant event.

I've not had any save/crash problems for a while but that doesn't make me complacent because I still remember the other side of the coin well.

Sh3 seems to be the only game where I never ever got mad, and started shouting :haha: When something "bad" happens, I'm, just disappointed, or annoyed, but never mad :)

I save regularly during patrol, and lately I have started saving to 2 different save files, and alternate between them any time I save. So when my last save game is corrupt or whatever, I try rhe one before that.

But I have had only 2 that a save file was corrupt. But I also had once that when I floaded the game crashed, but when I tried it a second time, everything was ok.

Just started a new career with this it seems or is more realistic.

We've all been there....:damn:

Whenever someone posts a poll about what they want for the next SH sim I always say 'wolfpacks, dynamic campaign....etc' the same old stuff. I think what I would really like is the ability to save the game without problems at any point, no restrictions.

Now that would be something....:woot:

sublynx 06-27-11 12:05 PM

I haven't had a crashed save game now for something like 30 saves. One of those saves was even a submerged save. I believe the change for better (I used to crash very often) was caused by the fact that I unchecked the read-only attribute of all SH3 files and SH3 save files. I have no clue why that would help but I have noticed before that the saves of old games (like Panzer General 2) won't work in newer versions of Windows if the save game file is marked read-only.

Another thing that might help is having lots of memory to spare. I only run a few mods (SH3+GWX+SH3Commander+Hsie's and Siebler's realism mod).

Twin Screws 06-28-11 10:21 AM

I've not had any crashes as yet, only on my second trip of a career using GWX, but did have a fright on return from my first trip.
I was returning to Whilmshaven, arriving under cover of darkness, when the shore batteries opened up on me & killed 4 of my deck crew :x
I've heard of 'Friendly Fire' by Americans, but these are German, What the @#*@ is going on there ?

Jimbuna 06-28-11 11:30 AM

You must have sunk a German ship without realising...any neutral or friendly country you fire on will automatically treat you as an enemy for the 24 hour period after said attack.
