So, continuing our attic cleaning evolution today, came across this:
![]() Inside the box. ![]() Looks like everything's still there! For me, this was the game that started me down the road that would lead me to Subsim. I never knew I still had this around until today.

My experience is that such magnetic disks loose data-integrity overtime. If you can hookup a 5.25 inch drive to your system, and the files are ok then dosbox should be your friend.

hehe...
If I'm not mistaken, it may even be out there on the 'net as Abandonware or similar. I was just kinda chuckling to see those disks again - it's certainly not as though 5.25" floppies are modern technology anymore. ![]()

Those were what? 128k? 520k? I remember thinking they 2.1mb 3.5" were "HIGH CAPACITY"!
As I sit here, I can see my old box of 3.5's, and right on top are the 4 disk set to Great Naval Battles! I got that working on my Dos Box and love it! Very cool packaging btw. |

Iirc the double density (single sided?) 5.25" were 360K. High density 5.25" were 1.2MB

It amazes me, when I've looked back at the games I've played, and the way they'd be delivered, to think that I can download in a few moments what once had to be shipped in cartons from distributors, to retailers, then picked up by me, driven home, installed... Man, we live in an amazing time.

If you've got DOSBox, and you can get the game off the floppies, then it'll run.

I just couldn't help from laughing at the system requirements: DOS 2.0 or better just slays me.

1988.
It's funny to me to see one guy's name listed as the developer - I know Sid Meier gets a lot of acclaim and notoriety for the Civilization series, as does Will Wright for the SimCity games (and their inevitable spinoffs)... these days, talk is almost universally about DevTeams, rather than one guy: "Ubi, Obsidian" etc.

![]() Man, if there's anything I learned growing up with my Dad in the 70's & 80's, it's that you just don't make technology predictions. I remember conversations with him in the early 80's about VR (hook up to a computer and trick your brain into actually being in the game), Y2K (clock will go to zero, then start over again), and portable computers that were more powerful than the mainframes then in use (which nicely describes the laptop I'm using to post this). Of course, I also learned other answers from him, too, most notably, "I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you." (Just so happens, he was right on that one, too. How was I to know Dad had a security clearance?)

I wonder where John W. Ratcliff is today? ![]() PS. I hope your box can handle the stiff system requirements. DOS 2.0 can be pretty taxing on resources. ![]() |
