Half of me thinks that was awesome, and the other half thinks he's an idiot who could have killed someone.

Exactly.
But the lowly mounted camera and the re engineered sound ad a lot of "extra speed" to it that isn't really there (though I found the squeaking tires rather silly). I doubt he has ever been faster than 100 km/h (60 m.p.h) in the film, which is of course still way too fast for inner city driving.

Yeah, I know the low-cam adds a lot of speed, but there were some sections where he was easily going fast enough around blind corners that any pedestrian in the road would have been unavoidably killed. I thought the tyre squealing was fake at first but then I wondered... it looks like it was recorded in like the 70s or something? Tyres and suspension were really not very good in those days, and bad tyres will squeal even at low speed... so I'm not sure.

was only a danger to himself, and wasn't faking anything. Enjoy.

He reached 150 km/h actually.
He also did it twice: first in a Mercedes and secondly in a Ferrari for the sound effects

Yes indeed. Overall it can be said that it was totally unacceptable to jeopardize everyone out there just for some "short film" with pretty much next to no contend.

If you compare the sound of the tires with the sound of the honks you will notice that the honks are very quiet compared to the tires. Therefore I think the wheel sound has been added afterwards (besides that it did not always match the driving). It was common practise back then to add exaggerated sounds to fast driving scenes in French movies (at least he didn't speed it up artificially as it was often done in French movies from the 60ies, or at least I never noticed it anywhere else as much as with French movies).

BTW Vatanen rocks.
