Well, hate is a strong word. I've eaten all kinds of fish, including shark. My mom used to grill a great catfish.

It's just something I don't actively pursue. Like Chinese.

It should be your patriotic duty to eat Cod on Independence Day.

Check out

Kurlansky, M., (1998) Cod: A biography of the Fish that Changed the World

(Which is actually a pretty interesting book)

That nurse is my wifes cousin and she was on the phone in fits of hysterics, we found it hard to understand what she was saying but she did make reference to "something the size of a cocktail sausage"

My dad learned to eat fish'n'chips with malt vinegar in England during the war but we never had it around here, until an "Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips" place opened up nearby. They had malt vinegar in little packets like fast food ketchup. I tried it because he was using it and OMG I loved it.

They closed down after a bit but most of the fast food fish places here still have it on the condiment stand. And the int'l market here carries bottles of it imported from the UK (and maybe other places, altho I haven't looked for it outside the UK aisles). I imagine it's way better than what comes in thost l'il fast food packets.

Maybe some of the Brits here could recommend a preferred brand?

Yep, Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips. I would eat there when I was a kid. I do not have a restaurant local now. The malt vinegar made the meal. The good old days.....

I don't know if it's just a case of "grumble grumble things were better in the olds days" but it seems like AT's was soooo much better than what's around now. Long John Silver's and Captain D's is what we have here.

Even LJS doesn't seem as good as it used to be, I worked in one for a couple years just out of high school and I remember it being much better back then than it is now.

I have not tried a Long Johns. To be honest, I have not had malt vinegar on fish since Arthur Treacher's. I just might get a bottle when we have our next fish fry.

When I was living in Holland alone I'd fly home every second weekend and take a dozen bottles of tartar sauce back for the cloggies, they loved the stuff.

As for malt vinegar, there are many brands available here in the UK but the Buna household prefer Sarsan's.

Middle finger eh?

That would probably be a good alternative to show the true dimensional size...yes

I love how these threads sometimes become cultural exchanges.

So... the Buna household prefers Sarson's malt vinegar, FK first turned me on to the idea, and both she and AVG have mentioned it several times. One more thing to add to the grocery list this week, and a quest for the pickled herring. Thanks everyone.

There used to be a brand of pickled prawns that I loved but the company that made them went out of business. Anyone here have experience with pickling shrimp?

I was at my sister's house watching one of those "guy travels around the world and tries weird food" shows. They were somewhere in Northern Europe - Amsterdam maybe? - and were out in the morning with their local guide buying pickled herring from some stand in a market.

The local dude mentioned that they were considered a good "cure" for a morning-after hangover by the Dutch/Germans etc.

My sister looks at her husband and says, "THAT'S why your parents always wanted pickled fish for breakfast on New Year's Day!"

Just as a disclaimer, I also enjoy drinking the juice (brine?) straight out of jars of dill pickles. So, you know, my taste buds...

In short, YMMV.

At least I don't drink the juice out of olive jars like one of my relatives. Cuz that would be gross.
