I'll agree with the sentiment that sometimes these tin cans seem to possess supernatural powers of detection, but I'm beginning to wonder if they don't have a little assistance. I ran into the Convoy From Hell the other night in spring of 1944 while playing TMO (thank you Ducimus!). Looked simple enough: two escorts with five ducklings steaming straight and true. What I got was detected immediately from 6,000,000 yards out and my butt kicked by depth charges dropped right through the mail slot. It happened so fast that I kept trying the approach and escape over and over to find out what I was doing wrong. But it didn't matter if I was sitting at periscope depth or 200 + feet below the thermal layer, silent and hovering, over and over again the DD and Escort instantly found me and pounded me into the sea bed. I even tried slipping under a wounded Maru to hide, but they circled the ship like jackels for hours until the Maru finally sank right on top of me. By then I was pretty ticked off, and I became obsessed with beating this pair (which I eventually did, but only by surfacing and running at flank straight at them pumping fish and shells, ramming the escort and making a bloody mess of my crew). Three of the five ducklings made good their escape.

But here's my question: I was down at sonar trying to determine from which quarter I was about to be blasted when I picked up a whine off the starboard beam - faint, but recognizable as an electric motor. Suddenly I'm Clark Gabel being asked "What is that, sir? I can't make it out?" So tell me, boys, is there a IJN sub out there passing love notes to my tormentors? Or have I finally lost my marbles? (Thank you Ducimus!)

Might have been radar on their part.

Sounds like calm water, and your not deep enough. Cheese tactic ill use on occasion, go down to 500 feet, boat allowing, put the rudder in a 9 degree port or starboard and leave it there for awhile. Only going to flank and hard rudder if they drop right on top of me.

Possibly, but not likely. Still its possible. The only way you'll detect them is by hydrophone, or visually. They wont show up on radar. (bug i never fixed)

Possibly? Okay then, I'm possibly losing my marbles!

Your map doesn't show a sub off the north east coast of Luzon, but I'm going to track down one of those other suckers just to quiet my soul.

Thanks.

Not a problem that I am having. They seem to be able to detect me as easily as the planes do.
