Just got a new (non-sub) sim game (bear with me here)

Just got a new, non-sub sim game today. Well, new to me, anyway.

It's B-17 Flying Fortress, The Mighty 8th. I've been wanting this forever and, thanks to some help from Frumpkis, I got it from Sold Out Software on Amazon.

Whilst installing it, it plays a little 'trailer' of sort. Pretty cool, actually. But one of the scenes shows the mission briefing room, and the list of upcoming missions. It sort of startled me (although, in retrospect, it shouldn't have!) when I spotted several quite familiar names amongst the future targets:

Lorient

St. Nazaire

Brest

Wilhelmshaven

Sure gonna feel weird being on the other side for a change!

You can't go wrong with a classic. I used to play a lot of European Air War. As a German you did some bombing of Channel shipping, and saw places like Plymouth, Dover and Lands End from the air. Also some French ports and cities.

You come for my sub pen and I'll shoot you down. I have a 105mm deck gun and you'll pay dearly for attacking my base.

That is a classic game. Over on the WWIIOL forums awhile back, the a guy playing it let us players name a bunch of the bombers and he would write AARs of each crews missions. I think 'my bomber' was named '****e-****er' and it had a women riding a fw-190 as its symbol! lol! it got shot down on its 12th or so mission. Hope you have fun with that game!

B-17 the mighty eighth was a great one.

I REALLY wish they would re-develop something similar to it with great graphics, a high level of immersion and in depth historical accuracy.

I do believe I have that collecting dust in the attic (with so many other past favourites).

But if I'm not mistaken my copy is the Commodore Amiga version

No problem. Honest. Just stand on your watch tower and wave a pretty flag and I'll make sure to, ahhh . . . 'miss you'.

I'll admit the graphics aren't 'great' but, from what I can see so far, I don't care at all. For an almost ten-year-old game, it's impressively detailed. I'm just playing around with it at the moment, having dusted off my Saitek X52 joystick/throttle, and I was sitting in the cockpit of the B-17. Holey shamoley! Four individual throttles and fuel/air settings, four individual propeller pitch controls, etc. etc.etc, and all of 'em are clickable and manually adjustable! Whoosh!

Alas, the game didn't come with either the printed manual or reference cards, so I'll be printing those Monday at work. But I foresee me starting to split my time between SHIII/GWX Gold and B-17.

(As an aside, this is sorta my beef with Ubi: B-17 Flying Fortress, The Mighty 8th is definitely not top-line graphics. But the detail, and immersiveness, etc., does seem top notch. I wish Ubi would understand, if they're gonna produce a U-boat simulation, that while amazing graphics make it beautiful to behold, detailed immersion make it fantastic to play.)

Now, why don't I believe you?

I had that game a long time ago; I didn't stick with it too awfully long. I was utterly garbage at it, and could never really get the hang of convincing an early Saitek X45 to cooperate with it. I think Il-2 displaced it eventually, but I don't remember.

Come to think of it, I believe I might have been sent against sub pens m'self. I vaguely remember asking, "Why bother?"

Kewl! Although I suspect I'll be quite a while just acquainting myself with the controls and commands before I'll have the leisure to explore for those!
