Activision killed Call of Duty for the PC this way. The new game won't allow independent servers which means no mods and no clans. Welcome to the brave new world ruled by consoles. The PC game, especially the PC sim is a dying breed.
Did you ever play CoD MW2? You are right, the game is hosted by a bunch of strangers, but you yourself can invite people to your group so long as they are in your steam profile as friends. Once you do that, you are guarenteed to play with them and if the teams allow on their side. There was a clan of 5 that stacked one side of a server. If the game host leaves the automated servers automatically search for a new host and the game continues as if the person never left. It's VERY annoying as often times hosts leave when they get frustrated by getting the smackdown from some trash talking 12 year old kid.

I hate it for the other reasons you posted, IE, no mods to fix stupid game play implementations and the absolutely horrible lag associated with playing the game. They did an ok job of producing the multiplayer, but I'm a bit pissed that I paid for the game in advance and was forced to wait 3 more days after my buddies got it for Xbox to even play the game and then on top of it, they basically told the PC community to F off. What happened was us PC gamers paid 60.00$ for a half arsed PC port and 3 hours of single player campaign... LAME.

I'm still bitter about that.

I haven't read anything about the DRM, but from what I gather, it's not good and frankly it will prevent me from buying it. I left WoW because I could not afford reoccuring subscription fee's while I'm a student at the University, no amount of nifty features will ever make me buy SH5 untill my finances are sorted out. Should funding allow, maybe I will purchase but I will approach it cautiosly. If not, SH4 is great as is SH3 with GWX. No skin off of my back, by the time Ubi has the kinks worked out of 5 we'll have full interriors for SH4 and 3 anyway and they will probably look a heck of a lot better.

If nothing else, UBI with their announcement may have only solicited feedback reference "DRM". They knew that SUBSIM.com because of the size of Neals family would be a good sounding board. The reception on their end was great today at the expense of Neals server. Their decision was promulgated before that announcement. I believe it was UBI's intent so soften the blow against them prior to release.

Never fear...in the UK we tend to reward financial abuse/failure.

Well, let's stop talking so much bloody rubbish, right?

They talk about a "dynamic campaign" that responds to the player's actions... and they do so while highlighting the battle for malta. Now as memory serves, the british dispatch some carriers to ferry some land based front-line aircraft to bolster Malta's defenders. Those carriers and the aircraft end up scaring the Italians into staying in port.

I'd wonder if the dynamic campaign wouldn't present the possibilty of a player success against the carriers causing the Italians to sortie against the reinforcement task forces and the island garrison. Maybe it would allow the Luftwaffe to gain aerial superiority which would change the Med battlefield tremendously.

Whats next.
Well to start off guys I was pretty happy to hear another Silent Hunter was coming out. But then I read that interview with the developers and that all left. I've been playing the SH series for...decades. I owned the original silent hunter. As non exciting as the graphics were in that game I was pretty much addicted to it from the start. Then they came out with SHII and I was even more excited. Graphics were enhanced and the game play changed a bit. SHIII came out and it was the same. Game play changed a bit and graphics enhanced. This past Christmas I bought SHIV. At first I never really wanted to buy it. To be honest I promised myself when it came out that I would never support any game UBI released. I played it and I must say that its not half bad. Its really just SHIII with better graphics which if you guys look at the series is basically what they did with the games, added better graphics to an already good game play mod. They did remove a number of things that I found nice about the other games but thats fine. Yes it isn't the best, but it can be modified and altered and really changed to fit what you want. (at least some of it can anyway)

So you asked whats next. SHV is next. A game that pretty much takes everything that we know from the Silent Hunter series and throws it out the window. First off not everyone likes tpye VII's. I personally prefer type IIs as they are great for port raiding and are hard as hell to find. So only having one choice in subs. Really? Secondly, just because the u-boat erea "ended" in May 1943 according to people doesn't actually meanit ended. The war if I'm not mistaken ended May of 1945. Thats two years, TWO, in which I don't know you could sink a couple of more ships and attempt to live through hell. I'm sure the surviving U-boat guys didn't really have the choice of ending their careers in 1943. (although many of them didn't have much of a choice. RIP). I personally I find what they have done as blasphemy. They took something that was good and changed it completely so that they can gain a more broad audiance. Business wise that's great but in the process you loose people like me who LOVE sub simulators.

So whats next. Whats next is me working on my 76' Datsun 280z and playing SHIII + GWX on my free time. I'm not going to buy SH5 unless they change it back to what all the other Silent Hunter games were. Unless they bring back all the uboats to choose from and all the other great things that I've come to love about Silent Hunter then forget it. I'm not spending $ on crap.

Sorry for the rant guys but I had to get it off my chest.
Sorry
Jan

Unfortunately apart from a some eye candy pics there is very little of the game we can talk about
Apart from deficiencies

but the OSP-theme is the main issue which prevents people even from buying it!
what use there will be to talk about a game we have (nearly) no info about (apart from screen-shots and a 2min-vid in-game)??

What's next? I have no earthly idea.

But there's this funny feeling in my gut another shoe is yet to be dropped....
