Default Finally managed to catch a task force

Or rather a task force catched me...
Sep 1939, second patrol, north of Scotland shoreline, not far from the west entrance of Scapa Flow. Happily practicing my marksmanship on a small merchant when my watch officer reported a destroyer closing. For it was still quite far away and its speed was just medium and not heading straightly towards me, I believed it had not discovered me. So I took my time and just dived to periscope depth. Suddenly the sonarman went crazy, reporting countless warships approaching, seemed to be an unreported taskforce going west out of Scapa. Drift silently in 2 knot to its course and raise my periscope, one HMS Hood, and one Renown class battlecruiser, never mind the others. Fired 2 underbelly magnetic torpedoes for each of them at 2km and slowly diving right after that. Several minutes later, three hit, one exploded prematurely, Hood sunk almost immediately, I guessed she exploded. However, never heard from the Renown anymore after that, a pity, but you shouldn't hope for too much. During all the time no one discovered me and they abandoned hope rather quickly and went their way, happy early war paradise.

A lucky shot for sure. I have yet to come across any task forces, though mostly beacouse when ever I get reports of them I run away as fast as I can. I have enuf problems eluding convoy escorts, no need to go inviting the Alied navy to come and kill me by doing all the hunting for them I say. I guess one day I will pluck up the tenacity and make an attack run on one and try my luck.

What date was this? In all the years I've been playing SHIII I've never come across HMS Hood... I want to sink her!

in grid AF74 I happened upon two task forces one after another. One task force had a cruiser with a number of escorts, the other task force had the HMS Hood + some escorts (I didn't sink her since I had no torps left.)

<Using GWX3.0>

Here we have the Hood with the Repulse, Aurora and accompanying vessels north west of Scapa heading for Loch Ewe at 05:04 on Oct 11th 1939.

Here we have the Hood, with Rodney, Furious, Renown and accompanying escorts about to enter Loch Ewe at 16:26 on Oct 22nd 1939.

Hi Kasperl,

I also came across such a task force in 1939 in roughly the same position. There were two battleships and an Illustrious fleet carrier and various escorts. I came across them at night on the surface. They never detected me.

The problem was that I was out of torpedoes in my VIIB. I was on my way home to Wilhelmhaven when I came across this juicy, unsuspecting targets.

I ran into one of those--litterally. Just drove right into the middle of one in a storm. Thought it was just a gaggle of Destroyers at first until I caught sight of Moby Dick here...

Then I saw red and went to flank, damn the torpedoes (or, rather, the depth charges) and tried to bag him, but he was doing something North of 18 Kts and I had no chance. I think I also died. I probably died. But it was pretty neat there for about twenty minutes.
