According to "The National Clean up - Paint up - Fix Up Bureau" (not kidding, it actually did exist) all you have to do is clean up and paint your house, it will survive a nuclear bomb. In this Federal Civil Defense Administration film they show the actual proof.

I live in what is basically a city split in two by a river. The towns founders decided to make it two towns so football would be interesting I guess.

all bombs up to ivy mike destroy my town, Ivy mike obliterates both of them. everytthing else blows up most of northern illinois...
