Default Planes o' steel?

Seriously now, are those Catalinas / Avengers / Spitfires supposed to take so many hits before they go down? I have great times fighting them but it would be better if i could actually win them...
No word for the liberators. I cant even scratch them.

My IXC/40 is equiped with that double barrel heavy flak along with 4 specialized flak gunners.

Avoid at all costs, it will only end with you been sunk/damaged or dead crew. Best option is to crash dive if you spot them, or detect on radar/radar detector.

I think the airplanes are pretty realistic, in reality, very few airplanes were shot down or even damaged by U-boats and the plane became the U-boats' main enemy.

Very true, as I have been on several occasions damaged by Ansons, including my last patrol which resulted in 2 dead crewmen.

Planes are very fast, very small and agile, the mere fact that you can hit one is lucky in its self, the chances of you downing one are on the slim side of anorexic Don't take the risk, you have to be very lucky all the time,They on the other hand only have to be lucky the once

Vierling or not, just crash dive. Unless you have some sort of deathwish.

I thought I saw in a thread a while back that aircraft in the game were made a little harder to bring down to kinda lead players to behave more realistically when it comes to U-boat vs. aircraft.

No worries for me though. I haven't made an attempt to battle it out with aircraft, nor plan to, unless I get suprised on the surface(loading externals, lookouts asleep, etc.)

Before I installed GWX I had no fear of aircraft. I had a good set of antiaircraft tactics and on one occassion I shot down over thirty RAF Coastal Command aircraft and even some Fairey Swordfish. That was with a single C/30 twin-barrel installation, later with two. At the time I wasn't conning anything that fit a Flakvierling or a 37mm.

This is because stock SH3 does not recognize that the U-boat is a suboptimal gunnery platform at the best of times. I've noticed decreased flak accuracy in GWX, with decreased boat stability and so on. My antiaircraft tactics still work, it just takes much more ammunition and the boat is damaged in the process far more often. That "me versus thirty" fight described above only knocked 2% off my hull integrity due to the tail gunners on some of the aircraft I was engaging.

If you're trapped on the surface, as in absolutely cannot dive for whatever reason (this has happened to me with the boat needing to "air out" to replenish the O2 and recharge batteries) then go to ahead flank. Man the Flak if you can. Keep an eye out for aircraft making an attack run. Turn in towards them hard, as this will cause them to overshoot. Then, as they pass over you, execute a hard turn away from their axis of travel. This typically messes up anybody else lining up on you. Gets real complex with more than four aircraft to keep track of.

That was more or less the original intention because shooting down double figures aircraft on each patrol was totally unrealistic.

I actually fight every single plane i spot that isnt followed by a DD.
I do down them most of the times but it takes a lot of time...
Anyways, as long as i have a flak gun ready to fire, no plane will be safe!
