I usually buy my games through Steam, but numerous posts here advised against that so chose the digital download from Ubisoft.
Thing is, there is no SH5.exe anywhere on my comp to mod. There isn't even a Silent Hunter game folder. There is only the ubisoft game launcher folder. Am i screwed? If so, are there ANY digital versions that can be modded? Amazon perhaps? A physical copy is not an option for me. Last edited by revanche; 08-03-14 at 10:21 PM. |

I don't have the Steam version, but thx anyway.
The more i look, the more it appears the Ubisoft version is completely unmoddable which means they sold me a broken game. I was hoping for a work-around but I am too pissed at Ubisoft to consider anything more than a refund. Live and learn. |

You will need to mod the daylights out of the game, but there are a lot of excellent mods out there, and there are new ones every week. One of the "problems" I had with SH5 was that, every time I started a career, somebody released a new mod the I just "had to have." Install new mod, start new career, repeat. |

Go to Ebay, you can pick up a copy of SH5 and a replacement DVD rom drive for less than $20 I bet. If you were in the UK, Id actually offer to send you both for cost of shipping only

He said "steam games" (as in all steam games in general - which are usually just fine) I don't know maybe I misunderstood him, nevermind. |

Cant say I've ever had a problem personally,
But in this day and age we might need to start breaking our attachment to owning a game on DVD. I really don't think it will be too long before PC gaming abandons DVD distribution, optical media as a whole is in a steady decline, and retailers who specialise in it have been dropping like flies over the last decade. I reckon once they have finally established fast internet connections in all those hard to reach areas, that will be the last nail in the coffin. |

Service bureaus are nothing new. They have been around since IBM launched The Service Bureau in 1954. They entice people who want a "simple, non-technical" solution with minimal user responsibility and decision-making. "The Cloud" is just the latest incarnation. So far, every attempt to impose the service bureau model on an industry has broken down under the weight of its inherent rigidity and potential for monopolistic (or oligopolistic) exploitation of the user base. Hopefully, the computer gaming industry will not be the first to succumb. |
