New British £1 coin

The government is going to release a new £1 coin in 2017.

This is to combat counterfeiting, as there are as many as 45 million forgeries in circulation (3% of total currency).

It will be based on the pre-decimal threepenny-bit, a 12 sided coin that went out of use in the early '70's.

The good news for STEED is he can dig out his hoarde of old money, give it a quick spray paint and be rolling in cash!

I'm curious, why did the British Government decide to go from making £1 banknotes to minting £1 coins? Is it cheaper to mint then print?

The coins will last longer than the paper money and are harder to counterfeit.

...money is kind of stupid. In this day and age it's all just numbers in a computer system. But, our governments still insist on producing physical fiat cash that isn't worth the paper it's printed on or the metals used to mint the coins. The US government spends more $'s to stamp pennies than the objects are worth.

Time to get rid of them. Canada did and I hope the nickel will be next. They are not worth picking up off the ground.
