Default Aircraft carrier costs 'to double'

Hardly surprising this day and age and par for the course where military manufacturing is concernrd.

Quote:
The cost of two new aircraft carriers being built for the Royal Navy is expected to be almost twice the original estimate, the government is expected to confirm this week.
In the latest budget, the Ministry of Defence is set to estimate the cost of the two ships at £6.2bn.
The department says it is renegotiating the contract to avoid further significant rises.
Six years ago, when the contract was approved, costs were put at £3.65bn.

One day, one day we will have a major military project that does not overrun or go over budget.

One day...

Sod's Law says the only one in history was the TSR2.

As a basic low-life in the military I used to see the results of bids/contracts/consortia, I used to see the costs double or more on a regular basis as the quality or functions reduced.

Think of a number, a very large number. Now double it and submit your bid. You've won? Nice, now double THAT number. What's that? Hard times? Ask the government for some tax inducement. Easy - I could write contracts.

So does this mean they will be less able to afford the ships aircraft, which they had already decided they couldn't afford to buy.

More than likely...we could ask for the return of the Harriers of course.

What odds on France selling a few upgraded Rafales?

We'd have given you the Forrestal, AND a penny.
