He won't be commanding CVN-65, as she has been decommissioned. If he's still in the navy twelve years from now he might command CVN-80.

I think the real question here is one that can only be answered by his parents: how could you name your kid "James Kirk" and NOT put "Tiberius" in the middle of it?!?

He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1990 so i'm guessing that maybe it was because at the time honoring some family ancestor was more important than a similarity to the name of a then barely known tv character.

Especially, since it appears he was born in 1967/68 which was right in the middle of when the TOS ran.

The Air Force, in designing fighter aircraft canopies, had a machine that would simulate bird strikes. They simulated it by shooting chickens at high speed at the test canopies. At one time, the wing commander of that test squadron was.. wait for it.. Col Sanders. Granted he was many levels above the testing office, but it is an almost interesting coincidence.
