Default Great Legs!

No, it not what you were thinking.... What I mean is that SH3 is one long legged U-boat sim. It has been out for eight years now and still going pretty strong. The player community here and on other websites are still very active. There are several super mods and tons of individual mods that allow you to shape SH3 into pretty much what you want. There are still modders here working on new mods and keeping some old mods up to date. Finally, SH3 has weathered all the different Operating Systems from Windows 98 up to the current Windows 8 and still keeps running fine.

So what is going to kill off SH3 and put it in the "I use to love that sim" and move it down to the Subsim radio room Classic subsim forum? Just wondering what you all think will do it.

My meager thoughts on the subject:
SH5....maybe...in a few years, but not yet for me personally.

A new U-Boat sim....maybe....But I am not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

A loss of interest....I personally don't think so

A new PC OS....This I think is likely. Eventually a new OS ( Microsoft sure spits them out quickly anymore) is going to make SH3 almost impossible to get up and running correctly. I think this is the likely death of SH3.

But hey! I am sure going to enjoy as long as I can.

SH4 had some improvements over SH3, but it also had some new bugs. If those had been ironed out and as much modding attention given to it, SH4 would be very close to perfect. Alas, that never happened.

The same case is even stronger for SH5: More improvements, but also more bugs. If SH5 was as easily modded as they had promised it would be much further along than it is now.

Until someone either adds the things needed for SH4 or figures out how to add to SH5, SH3 will remain the most rounded and complete subsim available.

I did not mention SH4 since I view as a Pacific War sim, but I agree with what you said.....it did have the potential, but I still enjoy playing it.

But with the Gold version you get a u-boat sim with the same bells and whistles, and with OM it is every bit as good as SH3 with a decent supermod. That said, GWX4 would have added and changed so much, I almost cry every time I think about it.

Same here. I go back and forth between SH3 and SH4 - SH3 for the mods and SH4 for the gameplay.

But then I stil play AOD and SH1, so what to I know?

About as much as me ....I still have my old Windows 98 desktop with a an old Nvidia 4600 APG video card and two Voodoo 2's stuck in the PCI slots so I can still mess around with my old favorites COAD , Silent Hunter Commanders edition, Freespace I&2 and Red Baron 3D. Guess I will have to save my Windows 8 with Silent Hunter III on it for the day the new "OS what ever" won't run it.

Just to counter some wilful misrepresentation...

SH3 gets as many viewing as the other two SH's so it is still just as popular even though it is the oldest sim of the three. Still the best in my opinion with GWX 3 & SH Commander.

I'm afraid I have to differ. All old code eventually becomes unsupportable. The original Silent Hunter was killed off by the conversion from DOS to Windows. Privateer died, too, replaced by a flock of spin-off titles with lots of dazzle but no immersion. Game companies think pretty graphics, high-tech animation, and lots of gee-whiz provide immersion, but they are flat wrong. (Look at SH5 vs SH3. Which is more immersive? Which has the undefinable, subjective feel of a WW2 U-boat?) SH3 will start to die when tablet technology replaces the PC. Then it will be a matter of a few hardcore fans keeping the old, low-tech PC running to play SH3 on. And eventually, that, too, will die and with it, SH3.

Solution? Pray that some company makes a true replacement sometime in the future. But be patient. I'm still waiting for the replacement for SH.

It will die eventually, like myself. Nothing lives forever. But I think SH3 will out live me as long as there are still PC's to run it on.

I doubt very much we will get a replacement SH, I think SH5 will be the last. What I would like to see is one based on the British Submarines like the S & T Class during WW2. The British operated mainly in the Med and had some very successful missions with high tonnages sunk. They did much better than the German U boats in this theatre, and Britain too had its Submarine Aces.
