Default Why was the 'Cracked' thread locked ?

Out of absolutely genuine interest could anyone please tell me why the following thread was locked ?

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=168287

The OP simply brought this community's attention to an article on a reputable website. Surely we're not going to start adopting such a draconian level of censorship here in subsim ? The subject matter of the article is of direct relevence to this forum. It was posted in way that did not breach existing forum rules and so I can as yet see no reason whatsoever for why it was locked.

Are the management of subsim effectively saying that we cannot discuss piracy at all, no matter if the BBC itself runs an article ?

Personally, I would not be able to participate in a community that exercises such a level of censorship...it sort of falls foul of my 'better world' ideals.

So an honest and open answer here would be greatly appreciated.

Yours, somewhat confused,

UG

This is the game world we live in today. This kind of stuff is news and totally relevant for the game we are playing at the very moment. I think the old style censorship attitudes in this forum have gotten some what out of control. That being said, I don't care to comment on piracy anymore nor will I start a thread about this kind of thing. CCIP is right about the fact that it just leads no where in reality.

What is there to discuss, anyway? What has not been said? Where CAN it go besides the usual "DRM sucks/cracks good", "DRM is okay/cracks bad", or "DRM sucks/cracks bad"?

It's been said repeatedly: if you want to talk about this issue, go elsewhere. You can call this censorship, but we can likewise call the posting of such discussions a blatant disrespect of repeated requests by Neal to cut it out. You are a guest of subsim, which offers plenty of services with nothing requested from you in return. Please, at the very least, respect the host's wishes. Being disrespectful in situations like this falls even more foul of the "better world" ideals anyone should have.

That was a perfectly legit news item. let's hope we don't see paranoic censorship here.

See post #8. Are you using the word paranoic correctly here?

Whilst I agree that it has been mentioned too much, and infact started a thread some time ago as a user asking for less, I feel that this was a genuine news item worthy of posting. Yes, perhaps it could have been added to one of the existing antiDRM threads (perhaps a moderator could merge it?) but to close seems a little harsh to me.

To those screaming "censorship" just remember - Neal's site, Neal's (longstanding) rules. If you don't like those rules, no one is forcing you to be here.

Straight from the Onkel's mouth (keyboard?):

Guys, I know some of you are excited about the possibilty that SH5 has been cracked. Big news, yes, got it.

However, we don't discuss it in this forum. I'm making this post to let you know this is news you better share somewhere else.

SUBSIM Review has a longstanding policy against software piracy.
We do NOT allow discussion or even mention of warez, abandonware, peer-to-peer game swapping, game cracks, illegal download sites, or illegal file-sharing. Nothing will get you banned faster than pointing people to illegal software distribution sites. Don't ask for serial numbers, manuals, or cracks. Any admission that you have in your possession illegal software can and usually will result in revocation of your Radio Room forum account and permanent ban. We do not care what you do on your computer in your home, but do not discuss it here.

Support computer game programmers buy legally purchasing their work. They have to eat too, you know.
Ok, I stand corrected. I'll relent on that point.

What of the second point? Is there any reason?

I echo your sentiments, as much as I'm utterly fed up of discussing DRM, the idea of just silencing a thread because of a legitimate post about a cracked version (note that there was no mention of how it was cracked, just that it was) is in my opinion, wrong.

I'd also like to as as to why the picture in this thread was removed and the reason given was that the picture was 'not allowed' - While I agree that pornographic content should be banned, this was in no way pornographic, yes, perhaps a little racy, however I've seen pictures as part of mods over in the workshop that add racy pictures to the game. Should screen shots of said mods be removed also?

The aforementioned picture was in a British newspaper, yet for some reason too pornographic for this forum.... Could someone explain this to me?

Rules say, we don't discuss cracks here.

And that's why this thread is now locked.
