Default The Unofficial Booze Thread

Okay, now I certainly don't mean to ruffle feathers, but I wonder what the other kaleuns quaff after/during a rough patrol.... or whenever the time is right.

For me it varies, but usually beer will suffice. Stella Artoise? Stella!!! If only Iowa would import Weinhard's from wherever the Western States get it, I would be truly, a mostly content man. Perhaps it is a forbidden product in this strange and uncertain culture of which I am. Is Iowa part of the Iron Curtain which still lives within my warped childhood memories? Only repeated watchings of famous American documentary "Red Dawn" will tell, perhaps.

BTW if anyone who posted about Hoegaarden in http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160276 is reading, I did find some "Hoegaarden White" (at least that's what they call it here, apparently) for sale locally. Worth a try, or no?

definitely
The "White" postfix is because it's "witbier", which translates into "white beer".
White beer is a turbid, light-yellow type of beer, and ideal to enjoy on a hot day.
You shouldn't just pour it in your glass as that makes it too clear, which influences it's taste. Ideally, you should not be able to see more than let's say 1.5cm (half an inch) through it.
To get it turbid, first pour in about 3/4 of the bottle (preferrably without creating too much foam). Then shake the remaining quarter a bit, and pour it right in the middle of your glass to make it turbid and create the recommended 2 finger widths of foam:

You might also want to try La Trappe Witte Trappist, another superb white beer, IMHO much better than Hoegaarden (and Hoegaarden is already really good), but much harder to find.

Oh, forgot to mention that my student corporation's pub is likely the cheapest pub in all the Netherlands, at 42 cents a beer (12 beer (Bavaria pilsner) for €5,00 if you buy them separately)
If you buy them all at once, you can get 14 beer for €5,00
Or even 30 beer for €10,00

That while a regular pub in Eindhoven usually doesn't get any cheaper than €1,00 a beer, at least.

This would be my all-time fave, on a little ice! Been drinking it for years.

Er... my standard operating procedure for beer is to take the cap off the bottle and start drinking.

fie! how dare you!
Glasses are much better than bottles. If you want to just relax and drink a good beer, you really need a glass. And if you want to drink fast and get drunk, you need a glass too because you simply can't drink fast from a bottle.
...So I guess if you don't want to get drunk AND you don't want to enjoy the taste of your beer, a bottle would be okay

Seriously now, you shouldn't drink the better, more expensive beers from the bottle. If you really want to enjoy the taste you should take a glass (yes, you can taste the difference. Especially in the case of white beer)

I don't drink when I'm on patrol. It wouldn't be fair to my crew to be less than clear minded if we run into an enemy patrol.

However, if we manage to sink a ship full of British ale and manage to haul a few crates aboard, the men deserve a bit of relaxation. Or perhaps we break out a bit of the "depth charge medicine" after a particularly tough time of playing dodgeball with the escorts.

One of these days I'm going to buy myself a bottle of Drambuie.

Good stuff!

Henry's is from the Irish part of the country, O'regon.

When I can get it, I prefer THIS brewery:

I mean, how can you not like a beer brewed in a town called, "Hopland"?

Here are my other 2 faves:

or this, quite simply, the best brandy in the world:

My Daddy always taught me to drink the best. That way, you go broke BEFORE you become an alcoholic.
