There are worrying developments about Russia planning to utilise the economic crisis in Iceland for its strategic intrests. This a time that Nordic countries, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland should help Iceland by all means possible, they are tough, so they probably dont except anything that is beyond our means.

So they can do US a favor by bailing out Iceland and not altering the "balance of influence" over there? ... I don't think it works that way!:hmm:

Again, as Subman said there - just as long as you don't get overly muscular about it. From the Russian perspective, they're "defending" interests too.

In fairness, I'm not one bit fond of Russia's overtures in the Arctic. Way to destabilize things, Tzar Putin.

This isn't the first time that Russia has helped out Iceland when her allies wouldn't.

1950s cod wars. USSR bought up all the spare cod that the UK stopped importing.

Be advised that German Bundeswehr depends on Russian airlifters to act internationally since 18 years. If we do not get relieved soon by NATO, Russian hordes will overrun Berlin before x-mas.
