Iceland and Russia

There are worrying developments about Russia planning to utilise the economic crisis in Iceland for its strategic intrests. This a time that Nordic countries, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland should help Iceland by all means possible, they are tough, so they probably dont except anything that is beyond our means.:yep:

I gotta say I haven't heard a peep anywhere about it?

Oh, the evil Russians. How dare they use what they have to advance their own interests...

I agree, to a point. Just as long as they don't use their muscle to advance their own interests.

Again, as Subman said there - just as long as you don't get overly muscular about it. From the Russian perspective, they're "defending" interests too.

In fairness, I'm not one bit fond of Russia's overtures in the Arctic. Way to destabilize things, Tzar Putin.

Oh joy what a surprise from Happy Times. Smart move by the Russians. Also I doubt Russia is going to move in, they know what would happen.

This isn't the first time that Russia has helped out Iceland when her allies wouldn't.

1950s cod wars. USSR bought up all the spare cod that the UK stopped importing.

Be advised that German Bundeswehr depends on Russian airlifters to act internationally since 18 years. If we do not get relieved soon by NATO, Russian hordes will overrun Berlin before x-mas.

Ah, damn it. Again?

Something should have been worked out between Norway and EU, but as EU didnt care that shouldnt prevent nordic members from lifting their sleeves. Monetary solutions, investments and joint ventures in oil, gas, refiniment, shipbulding etc. can all be found with nordic co-operation. The Russians clearly had some of the Icelandic bankers and politicians in their pocket before this, like was suspected for some time, this just revealed it.

So they can do US a favor by bailing out Iceland and not altering the "balance of influence" over there? ... I don't think it works that way!:hmm:

Do you have any sources on that?

JHuschke 10-10-08 04:03 PM

Well, we certainly can't and have no right to tell other countries how to run theirs or what to do..that is not right. But everyone has a right to defense, even if it was Germany attacking Russia, Russia has a right to defending themselves. Everyone does..

You mean they are going to do the same as the western powers have been doing all the time? Shame on them, how can they be so dirty? :nope:

I'm really getting fed up of all this anti-russian thing. When there are big troubles at home, the cheap and easy solution of pointing out the enemy outside begins to smell really rotten
