One shot kills

Last night I took out a troop ship and an ore carrier. The troop ship ate a volley of 4 torpedoes, which I sent to her graciously. But the ore carrier took three shots at its engine room.

With the newer versions of GWX it feels that anything larger than a small merchant is now very heavily armored and requires multiple torpedos to neutralize. Usually, one shot in the engine room used to be pretty much devastating for any medium merchant.

Even battleships never take more than four torpedoes.

I don't expect one shot kills while aiming at the engine room but one well placed shot there should slow it down to a crawl atleast. But thats not happening anymore.

I took down a empire freighter with one torpedo in the engine room using GWX 2.1.

Are you sure you're hitting the engine room? How sure?

You'd probably get better results aiming torps at different parts of the ship. In regards to the ore carrier, one eel at the engine room and one eel at the very bow of the ship would guarante a slow sinking 99% of the time. I understand in earlier versions of GWX minimal additional damage was done to a ship by a torp striking where a torp had already struck. I've heard that has been fixed, but you never know.

How long did you follow the targets to see if they would sink? Many times I will run through a convoy using each of my eels on a different ship. By the time I go back to finish off the straggling, damaged survivors many of them have sunk. This worked on whale-factory ships and a large merchant last night.

Maybe they just need more time to sink......

Hm, I consistently sink ore carriers with 1 eel, they usually take about 10 minutes to 2 hours to completely sink, generally hit them right near the bow

troopship I don't know, it's been ages since I've seen one of those

but most ships tend to succumb to 1 eel, even the large 10000 ton freighters and tankers and also the 4 stacker passenger liners

the only things I can't consistently sink with 1 eel are large warships (not counting Nelson BBs, those take only one), T3 tankers, small tankers for some reason and Passenger/Cargos

Engine room wouldn't be the best aiming point, it generally stops but doesn't sink them, or if it does it takes a loooong time..

I tend to aim for the 2nd mast from the bow with merchants, depth 5m, impact

for tankers it's magshots aimed underneath the bow, in front of the bridge, and if I fire another, it's a magshot aimed just in front of the engines

Practice, practice, practice, eventually you'll find the sweet spot for almost any ship

i'd like to know how are you sure that the big ship with one eel sink ....

in my career every time 2 eels to sink....... and i am only at 41 % realism...

always small merchant and passengers cargo need 2 eels to die.... if i shoot them just an eel to the engine room or just locked in view of periscope i have to wait near them for hours, plus than 4 and nothing happen just a sitting duck .. that it's impossible to sink by DG for the high sea.......

How do you sink so easily so big ship?

You appear to be using my preffered method (stern/engine room shots).

Give them time matey....9 times out of 10 they do slow to a halt and often sink.

I certainly wouldn't be wasting 3 eels on a shot to the same area

Always aim for the fuel bunkers or the engine room.
Sometimes they sink slowly...
Sometimes they go boooom!

Just keep experimenting!:hmm:

I prefer bow shots. They bring down the ships as their own momentum drives them under. In my experience, they are MORE lethal than engine shots. The only downside to them is that if they don't bring down the ship, they sometimes don't slow it down enough to catch the crippled ship like engine shots tend to.

And ore carriers seem to be amongst the easiest ships to sink with one torp. As others have mentioned though, any ship can take a bit of time to go down with one torp.

In all GWX versions, bow shots have worked the best for me. I don't bother with the torpedo-eating passenger/cargoes
