They drown anyway, just hit them. One torpedo should be enough in 99% of all cases, it doesn't matter where you hit them. Only two times they didn't explode instantly, but they ran full of water and drowned eventually.

I like being chased by destroyers, I fire my aft torpedo at him, and he'll never get me. ONLY use torpedoes, he'll kill you before you can man the deck guns.

Messing with a destroyer on the surface is suicide!!!

Fire torpedoes at a destroyer only when that's the only was to save your skin.

Running depth one meter below the keel and hope to hell you don't miss.

you should try a surfaced attack! LINE UP, FLANK SPEED AND FIRE THE DECK GUN!

Iv fought off a destroyer numerous times using only the deck gun with my trusty type VIIC. Though i have to admit, it is usualy a horrible idea

Know your enemy. Some nights that speeding destroyer can be a cruiser on redeployment, a chance for recognition.
If the destroyer is crossing your bow...
you should be at periscope depth on silent routine.
your eels should be set for impact at shallow depth, and high speed if TIs.
fire ahead of it like you're leading a duck. er, if you've ever duck hunted.
If the escort is bearing down on you, and you're facing it with the time, fire a spread with eels on the same settings, shallow and fast, but with a very small angle. Anywhere from ten to forty five degrees is enough for you to turn your boat and avoid him oncoming. Ninety degrees would be great if we had independant drive control.
But we Don't.

Also you'll hear advice about going deep upon detection. You've popped a convoy, and they charge you immediately. Use that knuckle manuever if you still have tubes loaded. Go no deeper than 25 meters, and don't worry about making noise. They know where you are, so punch the throttle, line up and shoot those last torpedoes even if they're just snap shots.

But whenever you're evading, always head towards the target(s), then turn towards the flow of traffic. Again, go deep only if you can't get off another round.
Be aggressive!
Now where have we read that before ?

There is only one rule, kill them before they kill you and don't fart about planning it out just do it.

What I find when I'm trapped near the surface trying to escape an escort is to head away from him at flank speed, then keep adjusting my course to match his such that he's dead astern w/ an AOB of 000. I then fire my stern tube at <1000m w/ a magnetic pistol set to explode 2m under the keel and keep on that course until I either hit, or the torpedo passes. The escort usually will not react in time if it's a steam-driven torpedo, and with magnetic pistols sometimes "close enough" will set it off if it doesn't pass directly under him. I'd say 2 out of 3 times I've taken out a pursuing escort this way.

I've found that trying to fight anything other than a Flower corvette on the surface is suicide. With the Flower, I aim my deck gun for his forward gun, then once that's destroyed as long as I manuever such that his rear machine gun can't engage me the corvette is "easy pickings".
