Have a look here: http://http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=117624&highlight=Letters+Jima+Fla gs+fathers

A few comments in there, sure others will have something to say. Still have not seen them myself.

They're both good movies i liked Letters from Iwo Jima better. Ones the allies story and the other is the Japanese story. Best to get both.

They are both very different, but I found them both brilliant.

Letters form Iwo Jima as incrdible, and I'm very picky about my war movies. It was poignant and intense and violent and disturbing and moving and all without being a cliche. Clint really has arrived as a brilliant director.

I havn't seen letters yet but I really want to.

Flags was good but not great. Its worth seeing.

I'm sure that everyone here yelled at the screen when they saw the marine lighting up a smoke on the deck of the transport after dark.

Slightly OT but it is perhaps not as bad as when the USA entered the war and their blacked out merchant vessels/tankers were silhouetted by the entire east coast of the USA which was lit up like a Christmas tree. Happy times again for the U-boat crews such as U-123 and co.

I read the book and the watched the movie, "Flag of our Father". The book and movie are both very good. It does portray the men who where caught in that famous picture from Mt. Suribachi. I recommend both the movie and the book. I have yet to see Letters yet. I hear it a very good as well.

IMHO 'Letters' is even better (even with the subtitles)

Letters was AMAZING and much better than Flags IMO, but you should get both.

Have seen Letters from Iwo Jima just days ago. Good movie, but not the advertised highlight, it did not really impress me too much. Although personal and intimate, it nevertheless left me a bit too unmoved, and untouched. It kept me at a distance, was a bit too sterile, imo, I never was close to the characters, never was immersed in the locations, and events. So, really - a good movie, but not spectacular. Eastwood has made better ones, and there are better movies on the matter as well - although maybe none from that special perspective (at least in Western cinema).

Got Flags as well, but will take my time before watching that, so that I will be unbiased again. Right now, my impressions of Letters probably would interfere.

Needless to say that Letters does not rank as popcorn-action-cinema. If you look for entertainment only, look somewhere else.

P.S. "worth buying?" I bought them in almost new condition, for 9 Euros per film. For that price, very fair deal. Would not recommend to buy for full price (new movies in Germany cost around 18-25 Euros)

I ordered the 4 DVD box set having not seen either film. I watched Flags on Monday when it arrived...it was good, but not great. It's the story of the 6 flagraisers told in flashback, which is not a style I usually enjoy.

I'm really looking forward to watching Letters From Iwo Jima when I get a free evening!

Were you looking for Hollywood? That could be the problem.

No, I were not. As is obvious from my "no popcorn-action-cinema" remark, or the quoted thread somebody else linked earlier (that thread was started by me).
