Life after SHIV?

A couple of years ago, some game reviewer predicted that SHIII would be the end of the subsims. Obviously he missed the mark.
With SHIV looming ahead, where do you think subsims are heading?

Will there be life after SHIV? :hmm:

I hope so
My dream would be a Silent hunter game where you have a choice over what side you want to fight for. So you have the whole submarine war of WWII in on game.

We have to cover the "Cold War" era! Mission one, sneek over to Russian waters and cut into the underwater communication cable, set up wiretap. Get out undetected.

Yeah, Silent Hunter series needs a nuclear sub sim badly. I want a Typhoon or a Los Angeles! Stay submerged for months! And have not to worry about the batteries go out!

Where's the fun in that though? The problem with modern day sub sims for me is that it's mostly a technological war where missiles are fired from hundreds of miles away. What I love about the Silent Hunter series is the fact that it really was a game of cat and mouse in WWII.

I'd like to see the SH3/4 engine reengineered from scratch. Build it with proper multithreading, DX10 and other enhancements--then take us back to the Atlantic during WWII.

Oh, and most importantly; all this development would take place during a reasonable development schedule and not some restricting accelerated development cycle as with SH4 (give the devs the room they need to breath and be creative).

In reality, if the game engine kept being reengineered to exploit technological advancements, you could keep the sub sim in the WWII theatre indefinitely.

I'd love to command a frigate in an age of sail game. Would need to keep the Luftwaffe out of it, though. :rotfl: :rotfl:

A subsim MMORPG. You can play both sides, or a destroyer escorting.. and even aircraft.

Sort of like WW2 online. Only not laggy.

What? Life after Silent Hunter???? I don't want to think about it!

If they ever to a modern one, the problem will be how and where to set it. There hasn't been a conflict that could make a good bases for a conflict (the best that comes to mind would be the Falklands, and that's pushing it). The only way is to go hypothetical like Harpoon.

It's best to stick to WW2 era subs as there is more historical data to work with. A new game engine for the pacific and atlantic would be a good starting point, maybe some AI subs and the ability to play different countries (British, U.S., German, Japanese, Italian and so on). Doing it by add on or providing the bare bones of it so modders can do the work for them.

Maybe that'll be SHV. Wasn't SHIV originally conceived as an addon for SHIII? In any case, there are many things that they can improve upon, whether they do Japan or Germany.
