My type IXB and her new Kapitant Leutnant

After my fifth mission on type VIIB, April 1940, 2d flotila, I've enough renown (8500) to upgrade my boat to type IXB. I also got a promotion to Kapitant Leutnant

First assignmet on type IXB is grid BF 21. On my way there, I'm north of Scotland when I receive two radio messages about two convoys! One from Stornoway heading East, the second one from Orkney strait heading west.

The nearest one is the one heading west, so I head east and position myself in front of the convoy. I go to 30 m deep, rig to silent running and use my hydrophone to track the convoy. I mark the sonar lines and draw a line using the ruler so I can get an estimation of the direction and the distance of the convoy. Sure enough it's a large convoy. Two long columns of mechants. I carefully position my self between the two columns and go to periscope depth.

I raise my periscope to take a look around. There they are! Two columns of merchants, consits of tramp streamer and small merchant... nothing bigger

I lower the periscope and set my torps to 3 m, impact pistol. I raise my periscope again, take aim at the nearest one... and hit fire. Hey, tonnage is tonnage, right?

I aim at another ship and fire. All four torps fired to four different ships, and all four hit the target, send them top the bottom of the sea .. too bad they're small ships: three small merchants and one tramp steamer.

I slowly sneak away from the destroyers that chase me, and release one stern torpedo to one C&D class on my six, but the torp misses. I dive to 50 m and run silently while the destroyers ping me and release depth charges.

After about 45 minutes game time, the destroyers are gone, I raise the speed to 6 knott, check the hydrophone ... no destroyers nearby and surface the boat to recharge the battery and reload torps. I head straight to the west, to the second convoy from Stornoway which is heading East.

I'm really happy with myself, and I make myself a cup of coffee. When I get back to the conning tower there are two airplanes approaching fast! I order ahead flank and dive. My boat slowly descend and when I reach 7 m deep the planes release their wasserbombs! One bomb hit the deck gun area causing a major flood in the torpedo room and the crew's rest room. Aarrggggh ...

I send my damage control team to fix the damage and take my boat deeper, while the crew control the flooding. Before the damage can be fixed, I hear the dreaded sound of PING! Followed by another and another... then the destroyers release their depth charges ... causing more damages and flooding. It's kinda scarry to hear the crews crying and say something like "My God we're gonna die" I use German voice and all the words I can catch is "Mein Gott.. " so I guess it means something like that

Destroyers keep sending me their depth charges and several minutes later, my brand new type IXB boat along with her newly promoted Kapitant Leutnant is sent to the bottom of the sea.

I still don't know if I'm gonna reload the game or play "dead is dead" and start a new career.

They killed you fair, I'd say, so I'd suggest DiDing deep into the new career. This is going to teach you a lesson about being more cautious. And playing DiD will probably give you much, much more pleasure in a time, when you come back to base after sixth patrol, still alive... Give it a try!

Call it training. You obviously did everything right doring your approach, and attack. But got cocky during the evasion. Firing at that escort was not a good idea. Also, you should have been more stealthy once you thought you were safe. 2 knots and silent running is the rule. You got to remember ,those guys will call in for reinforcements and they get pissed when you sink their ships. When in areas heavily patrolled by aircraft, because of its slow diving time, the IX is vulnerable. It is a good idea to stay with decks awash while you recharge batteries. This cuts your diving time to 19 seconds.

Don't give up! Even dead, experienced skippers are hard to find

I hope the damage is a bit better in SH4, i really like it when you get some damage and you have to abort the mission and work hard to sort it out. more often than not you die, i like a bit of drama.

One of my favourite patrols was when I attacked a convoy in about 80m of water (I know...I was impetuous! ) and I was being DC'd. I was skulking about 3m from the bottom and some DCs slammed me into the seabed. I was stuck there with no engines for quite some time really battling with the flooding, all the while new DCs are raining from above. Eventually the DDs left and I finally managed to get the boat afloat. It felt like I'd just reenacted a portion of Das Boot!!!

"My God, will this ever stop?" (he means the depth charging).

Have a nice new career. I know DiD is bitter.

Cheers,
AndyW

And treat your IX Boat with respect and keep Bernard out of the kitchen.
