Das kleine Boot

I was getting to like the cramped & runty type IIA.
Manuverable, but not super quick by far. Im on the 6th. patrol of the 1st carrer since I started playing this game. No deck gun and just five fish. I lost 2 c2's and a costal so far because of single non-fatal hits and or misses combined with empty tubes. (*) Two other times merchants out ran me despite my tracking attemps. Despite that, I belive most patrols like the last one have been good.

Last patrol score #1 tubes 1&3

Score #2 night attack tube 2

With sufficent renown for a VIIB, a deck gun are now looking like a needed option. But I wanted to see what the Type IIA canoe could do. Resisted spending renown on the battery updrade. I've also come up with a good fuel saving method of patrol, something I picked up from the SHII days.
(*) 2 questions remain. Can a VIIB deal with manning a deck gun in slightly heavy seas making the spent renown worth it? This next one is a bit longer winded - I tracked a fished costal from AN28 WsW almost all the way to the cost hoping for smoother waters so I could try and finish it off with the flak gun. The hit took her from 9 down to 5 knots. A foolish hope apparently because as I approched the cost the merchant just vanished! I was right on her maybe 700m out. What's up with that?
I thought ok maybe this is the games way of dealing with a wounded ship kickin the bucket. But K-log didn't show the score. Grrrrr..

As to the II type, after BdU decided to retire my VIIB Kaleun after 8 patrols I started another campaign in 2nd Flotilla on IIA type. And I was amazed how interesting it was to change to such a small boat. The main differences I see between the two types are:
— Very low fuel of IIA, slow speed and only 5 torpedoes let you do you patrols quick and short, just one per night. That sounds nice for a man ike me that can play only maybe like 3-4 hours a day at most because of job and so on and dislikes saving his game and starting again at saved point next day.
— You usually get your assignements close to base (like from Wilhelmshaven to SE British coast), so your trips are short and coming back to base is not so boring (with no fish nor ammo passing enemy vessels…).
— However these circumstances don't let you finish your patrols with a big tonnage score (you can only dream about 50k tonnes, not mentioning more), so it's not for those who wish to beat their life records.
— The above also makes your career more realistic as you cannot gain the safe first place in aces ranking after just two or three patrols, with all the available medals and honours. In fact, gaining any medal for you is a real problem, not mentioning decoratings half of your crew members with Knight's Crosses or Gold Crosses.
— Lack of deck gun makes you ”weather proof”. Many times in type VIIB I shadowed ships for a long time with hope that the weather becomes better and I could shot them with my gun instead of wasting torpedoes. In IIA you don't have such problem any more (It's default FLAK seems completely useless, I couldn't sink a single small coastal frachter with it).
— Your crew is much smaller than in VIIx type, so you can get familiar with every single member of your team. And probability of getting Bernard aboard is much smaller. And the
— Very few torpedoes you have and only 3… those tubes, I don't know how you call'em in English, make you think about tactics very carefully. You can easily finish your patrol with 2 ships hurt but none sunk, what is, obviously, not what you want.
— I found it also very interesting change in tactics that you do not have any aft torpedo tubes nor external torpedo storage. That makes you to always position yourself from the front side, but on the other hand you are never made to surface to load the external torpedoes.

Maybe I'd have even more remarks on the IIA type, if I haven't been sunk yesterday by a British DD around the Thames throat (or wahetever it's called). That sudden and unexpected death was the most impressive thing that happened to me as for now in SH3. Yay…

I like the Type II interior best, because it´s only one very confined compartment which gives you a more realistic immersion feeling. You "feel" how small a U-Boat actually is.

Apart from that, I´ll stay with my VIIc until they´ll drown us.

Cheers, AS

The type II is a good little diver! It does suck to go thousands of nautical miles with only 5 fish though. Give me the IXB any day She be a fat pig but she goes far and wide with lots of torpedos

In my new GWX life, I got bumped into a IIA and made one patrol in which managed to sink one ship per torpedo. The weather had been good and I remembered to economize fuel on the way out, so I had enough to burn chasing targets. I was happy to return to Kiel with a cupfull of fuel left and to find out I had enough renown for a VIIB sumbie.

Currently, I also am doing a career with the IIA. It's a nice boat, but he has a very small amount of torpedoes. On my last patrol I went to Dunkirk, sank a passenger liner (25000 tons) and a large tanker (16000 tons). For a IIA that's very decent I think.

I did my first 9 patrols in GWX in an IIa in the 1´st Flotilla before trading her in for an VIIc. Did not do any upgrades at all to her. In GWX you have 3 spare torps, so you can reload all three tubes. Well, she´s an school boat now.

How strong wind and rain intensity that you can man the deck gun in is set in the StormConditions= line in the .cfg file in ...\data\Submarine\NSS_Uboat7b folder, for the VIIb. It has been discussed in several threads.

The disappearing ship most probably reached it´s last way point and got deleted.

One of the Top reasons why i love the Type II! I gives me the tottal feel of the whole Deal.(One's gotta love it when you can actually see your sonar-man)
Good diving times and very agile. If needed, just stuff one more eel into it. And then with 6 eels in tottal go and have fun.

The best Costal Boot ever! I'll give the Tommies quite sting!

I just upgraded from my Type IID to a Type VIIB. I really like the IID, much more than the IIA. It's a little faster, and has a much greater range.

What I would really *LOVE* is to have a Type XXIII as a late war option, without needing 30,000 renown to get it. Fast, quiet, and with a crash dive time under 10 seconds, you could save yourself a lot grief when surprised by aircraft.

The only downside is you only get two torps, with no reloads.

My new career is in a Type IIA at the moment too. Makes quite a big change to the IXC I drove in my previous campaign! Not a bad little boat but the range is a serious problem as is the lack of deckgun for early in the war where you commonly encounter lone, unarmed merchants. Have to say goodbye to those 50K, 60K, 70K and 80K patrols where you come back showered in renown and awards though unless you get really lucky and happen to stumble into the path of a task force or ocean liner.

Mine has a total of 6 torps though. Is this something that was changed with GWX perhaps?

It certainly is a different experience but I'm looking forward to longer range, faster surface speed and large torpedo load that I'll get when my flotalia changes to the type VII boats.

Looks to me more like the coastal reset = Arrival at dock
"the merchant just vanished" No mention made of the ship visibly sinking with no renown credits
