NYGM question for modders
Hi all,
By any chance, does anybody knows what file/setting is making the sub slowly sinking when all stopped at periscope depth (or even deeper) in NYGM? It’s puzzling me, as even adding German U-Boat Compilation to NYGM, the sub is still slowly sinking...so it can’t come from the GUC files/settings! (Same GUC files in GWX doesn’t bring up this feature) Thanks in advance for enlightening me

Are you using HSie's Silent Running fix? I'm wondering if this is the cause? I have the same problem.

If I recall correctly, it one of the following 2: NSS_UboatXX.val or NSS_UboatXX.sim
In SH3 1.4B there was no problem with going at less than 2 kts, subs had neutral buoyancy, but I think it was altered by GWX and probably by NYGM too. Those are my 2 cents... Sorry I can't help you more, my knowledge of those issues is very limited CapZap

Even without the silent running on, U-Boat is sinking. In fact, it’s not a problem at all!...it’s realism. Quote:
Even GWX with Stiebler patch and the silent running fix doesn’t make the sub slowly sinking at periscope depth. Maybe ANVAR Fabulous SH3 knowledge knows something about?

Slow-sinking effect in NYGM
No submarine from World War II could 'hover' underwater, with engines at zero, or even set to very low speed ahead. Tides and currents would cause it to rise or sink according to local conditions. The hydroplanes were used to control depth, and they required a certain forward velocity.
So the question is: for realism, do you provide a slow-sinking model for the U-boat, or a slow-rising model? Realism requires that the U-boat have a slight negative buoyancy (tendency to sink), especially when at periscope depth, because the consequence of the U-boat rising slowly out of the water during an attack on a convoy might be very serious indeed! At deep depths, slow sinking would also occur due to constant slight leakage of water into the boat, causing a downward motion. So that is the NYGM model - slow sinking at all depths at low speeds (2 knots or below). Der Teddy Bar introduced the first slow-sinking model for NYGM, but the Stiebler hard-code fix makes a more certain effect, sinking at a fairly steady rate. I hope that helps, Stiebler.

So to reproduce your nice slow sinking feature, in what file lies the negative buoyancy?

That’s actually the good part of this feature, you are not sinking at 1 knot, but can’t level up unless 2/3 knots
