Map incorrect at near full zoom!!
Hi all.
Just noticed a glitch with the map. I'm running RFB 1.5 with RSRDC RFBv15 + MONSUN v200 + PE 3.3 + ROW PE3 plus a few other small compatible mods, my problem is this: When I zoom in to a enemy port, the map alters position slightly and the port changes location slightly. I wouldn't be worried about this normally but it actually has a physical affect in the game world. I was approaching a harbour south of tokyo under silent running, popped up the scope to see a nice bunch of nice juicy tankers to play with. ![]() I had a good 2000 yards of shallow water around me but when I zoomed in on the map to plot ship positions the mass of land altered and the base shifted in position. Next thing I know I'm hearing crashing sounds and MEDIC!!! being shouted. I go to my conning tower to find that I've run aground to the extreme!!!! Game Over!!! ![]() Anybody experience anything similar and if so, are there any correction mods available?? Thanks in advance, exponent. |

Could you say how far the land mass had moved.
There are 2 maps in the SH3/4 series, One a World map for looking at from 'space' and is fairly low res, and the other is for 'close-in' work. When zooming you might have crossed the boundary where the game changes the map it uses. This is seamless, but you'll notice it at about 8x (I think) when zooming in, the blocky map suddenly gets a lot more finer detail, and visa versa. I've always used this finer map for creeping along the coastline and have no problems yet. Other than this maybe it is a problem for the area you're in. ![]() |

I have noticed on some close zooms land masses shift. Piers will be drawn out away from land or sometimes appear to be surrounded by land. Thankfully it has never resulted in a grounding. In the end it doesn't matter. No matter what the captain is always at fault!

I think in those cases if you open the appropriate campaign layer in
mission editor and then hit render accurate shoreline then save it again this problem may be solved. I dont know for sure but I would suspect so. M |

Captains fault??? If the entire country of Japan shifts slightly to the right by half a mile how can it be my fault??:rotfl: :rotfl:
I'm jokin of course. Nah, must be a game fault. Its no big deal. Just thought I would bring it up I guess incase there was a quick fix. Mush Martin - I have never used any kind of editor so I wouldn't knoiw where to start mate! Thanks anyway. ![]() I think Rip's explanation of the land shift pretty much has it nailed. As far as by how much movement, its hard to say to be honest, its not "miles" but it was just unfortunate that I was a "little too close to land" when I zoomed in!! ![]() |

I noticed this also yesterday.
it seams to be the second last zoom that of-set the view/distance a bit. I had a special ops mission to set some gurillas to shore. My sub was marked as being about 500 meters from the land on the map but on the freecam view a was just 5 meters from the land. Iam only running TMO1.7+RSRDC as major mods and whit some smaller mods.

The fix is to remove RFB 1.52 from activation in JSGME. Go into the RFB Data/Menu/Cfg folder and remove the file Maps.cfg from the folder (or simply rename the file to something like "RFB_maps.cfg").
Of course this will cause the maps to be displayed as the stock game. But, your really not missing any features except to have the "SymbolZoom=15" changed back to the stock "SymbolZoom=10", no big deal. If you want, you can manually change this parameter for both the Nav map and the Attack map. Use notepad to type in the change and "save" the file before exiting. The stock zoom levels will prevent the harbor docks from slipping about like their on ice and the positions are a bit more centered. This has been an issue for quite some time, the point is sometimes it's better to leave good enough alone.

I've got a better solution. Stop relying on your map so much, and navigate more with your eyes and what have yah.

The problem is magnified when using the bearing overlay ... because additional "zoom" ranges are added to the map but the extra ranges don't include additional port overlays. Ergo, when you zoom to a non-default level on the map, the port doesn't correspondingly change size.

well a quick fix would be eliminating the last zoom in range in stock would be a way to avoid the problem and then naturally you would have to limit it to the same for any mods too.
the best way would be if someone wanted to take the time to test to find the exact most zoom range that you could use without getting the distorted effect. you could then know how to reset the game to go no lower than that and it should resolve the issue |

If the zoom level at the closest setting is a problem for some, then remove the first level (I believe it's 1; they start at 1,2,5,...... and so on). Removing the first level (1) in both Navigation and Attack Maps should do it. Follow the path I gave you eariler in this thread and open the Maps.cfg file with Windows Notepad. Have the file Zoomlevel= start with the 2,5,.....and leave the rest. Remember to "save" the file before exiting.

![]() @CapnScurvy: I've removed the Maps.cfg file for the next RFB release. Map works like a charm now. Thanks for the tip!
