Default The Truk Triangle

Hey guys, I've got a question about a bug.

Anytime I get near Truk, around about the outskirts of the shallow water of the atoll, my computer goes bonkers. The last time it happened, I had bagged a tanker and a few sampans before I got to Truk. When I get near, the FPS shudders down to a standstill. I tried to sail away, thinking it'd be like the slowdown you get near a port that goes away when you sail off, but it didn't happen. I eventually had to abandon that patrol because it was unmanageable.

I restarted the third patrol of the USS Trigger and set sail toward Truk once again. This time, I got close, and the shudders started. I had saved ahead of time and reverted back to that save, and as long as I sail AROUND Truk without approaching it, I'm good. The first time I encountered this bug, it also seemed like a bunch of ships had exploded and were burning in the harbor.

Has anyone had this, and does anyone know what's causing it/how I can fix it?

No idea how to fix it... Truck is like a mega fortress its insanely defended. There's layers of nets and tons of shore battery's that will pown you. I tried a rade on the base once using the BB Queen Elizabeth and i found out the south east approach was MINED!! MINED! rawr. I avoid the place like the plague.

I've never had a problem attacking Truk. I do it quite a bit and am usually disappointed at the lack of good targets. But I'm an expert harbour raider, I guess. I've noticed that the ships in harbour at Truk tend to spawn and die right away myself. It must be a bug.

A poorly placed harbour is my guess.

I had the same problem. Frame rate dropped to 2, and after repeated tries, to visit Truk, finally gave up and avoided it. Never had this happen before. At the time I was using TM 1.9, Websters sound. Now, I'm using TM 2.0 when the situation calls for will attempt Truk again.

Alright, I've run an experiment. From a position probably 20 miles south of Truk, I "flew" my free camera north toward Truk. Without sighting any land (but I did see a floating turret) I came across the choicest targets you could ever want. A carrier, battleships, and cruisers all parked in the harbor there, lying at anchor. So, I figure that if I can fly the camera up there, maybe now I can sail up there.

Wrong. I got within 2 miles of one of the channel entrances and, boom, FPS drops like a rock. I reverted to a save I'd made before hand just in case of this happening.

So, I've tried it from different directions and at day and night. Has anyone tested this in stock SH4 1.5 without any mods?

I have a sneaky suspicion it's the subnets around the place. Those can be FPS killers.

Hmmm. How effective are the sub nets, is it possible to remove them, and how big of a blow to realism would it be to remove said nets?

Very effective. You have to find another way around, you cannot pass them.
They are easily removed via mission editor. (check Jap_minefield.mis file if i remember correctly). Realism in this case is irrelevant if the game is unplayable in that area. Of course it might not be the subnets at all, but theres a good chance of it.

With stock SH4 1.5 there is nothing there but islands in the middle of nowhere.
