The Truk Triangle

Hey guys, I've got a question about a bug.

Anytime I get near Truk, around about the outskirts of the shallow water of the atoll, my computer goes bonkers. The last time it happened, I had bagged a tanker and a few sampans before I got to Truk. When I get near, the FPS shudders down to a standstill. I tried to sail away, thinking it'd be like the slowdown you get near a port that goes away when you sail off, but it didn't happen. I eventually had to abandon that patrol because it was unmanageable.

I restarted the third patrol of the USS Trigger and set sail toward Truk once again. This time, I got close, and the shudders started. I had saved ahead of time and reverted back to that save, and as long as I sail AROUND Truk without approaching it, I'm good. The first time I encountered this bug, it also seemed like a bunch of ships had exploded and were burning in the harbor.

Has anyone had this, and does anyone know what's causing it/how I can fix it?

No idea how to fix it... Truck is like a mega fortress its insanely defended. There's layers of nets and tons of shore battery's that will pown you. I tried a rade on the base once using the BB Queen Elizabeth and i found out the south east approach was MINED!! MINED! rawr. I avoid the place like the plague. :O:

I've never had a problem attacking Truk. I do it quite a bit and am usually disappointed at the lack of good targets. But I'm an expert harbour raider, I guess. I've noticed that the ships in harbour at Truk tend to spawn and die right away myself. It must be a bug.:shifty:

A poorly placed harbour is my guess.

I had the same problem. Frame rate dropped to 2, and after repeated tries, to visit Truk, finally gave up and avoided it. Never had this happen before. At the time I was using TM 1.9, Websters sound. Now, I'm using TM 2.0 when the situation calls for will attempt Truk again.

Alright, I've run an experiment. From a position probably 20 miles south of Truk, I "flew" my free camera north toward Truk. Without sighting any land (but I did see a floating turret) I came across the choicest targets you could ever want. A carrier, battleships, and cruisers all parked in the harbor there, lying at anchor. So, I figure that if I can fly the camera up there, maybe now I can sail up there.

Wrong. I got within 2 miles of one of the channel entrances and, boom, FPS drops like a rock. I reverted to a save I'd made before hand just in case of this happening.

So, I've tried it from different directions and at day and night. Has anyone tested this in stock SH4 1.5 without any mods?

I have a sneaky suspicion it's the subnets around the place. Those can be FPS killers.

Hmmm. How effective are the sub nets, is it possible to remove them, and how big of a blow to realism would it be to remove said nets?

Very effective. You have to find another way around, you cannot pass them.
They are easily removed via mission editor. (check Jap_minefield.mis file if i remember correctly). Realism in this case is irrelevant if the game is unplayable in that area. Of course it might not be the subnets at all, but theres a good chance of it.

With stock SH4 1.5 there is nothing there but islands in the middle of nowhere.

i just enable carotios truk mode, it has the coral reef around Truk, its awseome.

Also, anyone know if you can set mines to impact surface traffic?

I am COMPLETELY ignorant when it comes to modding and whatnot. Any chance you could give me a basic rundown on how to remove said subnets so I can test this?

Lionfish298 06-17-10 07:46 PM

OH, ALSO.

I forgot to ask.

Does anyone know why the only things I've been able to find within 500 miles of Truk have been fishing boats other than the Jap fleet tied up inside the impenetrable FPS-nets? I killed a nice little Corvette halfway to Palau, but that's all I've found after a month of scouring the sea.

Lionfish298 06-18-10 02:18 PM

Would anyone be offended if I.... *bumped* this a wee bit? :D

OmegaMan 06-18-10 03:47 PM

Hi all.
I removed the subnets via SHEditor and the problem persists.
I approach with the free camera into the Truk lagoon and there are a lot of semi-sunken ships and there are a lot of debris floating around. :o
Any ideas?

Regards.

I go into Truk all the time & find BB's there later in the campaign, always at anchor & never moving even after several hits. I liek to raid harbors myself since sitting ducks are easier to kill :yeah:

I haven't encountered any problem but we may be running different versions, I have been using RFB v1.52 + RSRDC v15 / v421 & patch - 2 + US Medals Fix II for RFB

I am currently D/L'ing the newest RFB & RSRDC so I won't know if there have been any changes to the above experience of mine until later.....MY biggest problem has been finding historic battles to participate in. I'm either in the wrong place @ the wrong time or too close to their spawn points when the day arrives I guess.
